As I mentioned earlier regarding the sun. Remember that if you get really f*ed up.

Driving around in southern Africa - mainly a surf trip; but while you're there... I bought a cheap compass and had a (paper) map. I'm sure that $10 compass saved me from driving 100 miles in the wrong direction a few times.

Ironically I used to teach orienteering, and today I can barely orient myself out the front door.

OK, I have a question. We are not surveyors but we work with them constantly. Most of our customers (surveyors) want local projects projected to State Plane. Of course many want UTM or WGS84. My question is why is anyone still using NAD27? Why use a 90 year old projection when NAD83 has been around for over 30 years? It is just the old "We have always done it that way" way of thinking and change is a bad 4 letter word for so many?

I have always figured it was like someone using "plant coordinates" and just make the world fit to the local made up system. If all the maps one uses are in a system, stick with it, is something I can understand.

We did all that triangulation and orienteering stuff in the Army. Good to know, i always take a topo map with me when backpacking.

And if all else fails, follow water downstream and you'll eventually hit civilization.
