THAT'S why I don't have any friends.
|
Not sure I can blame it on the Porsche, I'm just a dk. :)
|
Car "image" is a weird thing. I can say that generally speaking, car guys seem to be friendlier towards me in the Mustang than they were in the 911. I'm not meaning at cars and coffee events, just regular guys coming up to me to talk cars when I'm buying gas, etc.
One guy on the Bullitt posting board had an interesting experience. He & his wife had driven from the snow belt to California to escape winter for a spell. A stranger approached, asked how he liked his Bullitt. The usual 10-15 minutes conversation ensued. As they we parting, he stuck his hand out, introduced himself. The stranger replied; "Chad McQueen". So, somewhere out there is a Bullitt Mustang with a real McQueen signature on it's dash. ;) |
There's a big difference in peoples attitudes toward old Porsches and newer ones too. When I had the Viper Green long-hood people would come up to me all the time. They'd ask "what year is that" or "cool color". In the 997 Turbo, nobody gives me a second glance. In the long-hood people would wave or give thumbs up the freeway. In the Turbo I get tailgated and cut-off constantly.
It seems the opposite with Porsche owners. The Early 911 Registry and R-Gruppe crowd are the most stuck-up bunch of elitists I've ever met. |

Even if it's a Boxster?

I have had some truely enjoyable encounters this past year while commuting in my SC. I always have my windows down so I can't ignore comments
Young kid in his car, some filled with freinds, pulls alongside and shouts "what is that?" "What year?" I answer nicely with a smile. (They have zero exposure to these cars here in the Hartford area. They are just car guys seeing something odd.) Light turns green, and they shout back a compliment. I smile even more and thank them. I do think being in an old SC invites more positive reactions. But driving an old car is more of an event than just getting someplace. So in that regard, I am much more willing to engage in random conversation. is it just Porsche drivers who are rude? Or just easy to point your finger at the Porsche. What about other marks? If you pulled up to a random person at a gas station and started to ask about how they liked their CRV, they'd be justifiably worried. Or not. Probably depends on many factors that you might never know. Do these studies confuse correlation with causation? I also own a 2015 Chevy Colorado. I get questions from random people all the time. It's a very good looking truck and currently very popular. I act just like I do with the SC. Answer questions ask them a few. Exchange pleasantries and move on. I leave the conversation a little happier. I think the other person is a little happier too. |
But maybe I missed the point of the OP and followed a tangent too far.
Were the men just jealous and intimidated by the Porsche owner. Hence less likable. "Competitor" who did better? Do we discount the effort needed, and probably the single mindedness. Perceived as Less loyal? Was this ever quantified? When was your loyalty compromised by sudden new Porsche ownership? How many times did your ex-friend, aka new Porsche owner, stab you in the back? Numbers please! Ford Fiesta, So more likable. Do the respondents have more friends with fords than Porsches? Statistically this must be true. So is it really a question? Does it really matter? |
I think there is more than "car culture divide" in that article. The study was done at a German university...

Worthless study. Not that there's anything wrong with that... |
I my Corvair I get mobbed with people everywhere I take it. Everyone loves the car and wants to talk about it. In the Lotus (which is bright orange) it's about the same... Everyone wants their pictures taken with it.
When I had my 911SC noone ever paid attention to me.... I kinda miss that. Be careful what you wish for LOL! Sent from my Samsung GS7 using Tapatalk |
The 914 caused a laugh-riot of love and affection when ever I drove it. Sold it.
.....not as reliable as the rest of this list (below signature) > |

That former group, makes me think the 944 might get a short lasting bubble market if those wanting in high school all try to get one at once when the kids are done with college and out of the house. So long as the imitation fuchs are cleaned up nice, it doesn't seem to matter at all that my '86 944 is dented from wrecks before I bought it, or badly needs a new paint job to be presentable. It still gets a stream of "nice car" conversations even in its battered paint and body work. I drove won a drawing to temporarily take home a 2015 Porsche 911 in October 2015, I was surprised at how that car got noticed, but in a different way, and by a completely different set of people. I think the reasons people buy Porsche's changed, and because of that, I tend to tune out modern Porsche's when I see them. I did really love the current generation 911 despite my expectations. It'd make a near perfect daily driver. |
Was this survey done by the same research group that said Hillary had a 97% chance of winning?
So many surveys are just totally useless. When any surveyors call me I don't answer or hang up. I figure only only stupid people bother to take surveys so the results of the survey are stupid as well. |

My experience with people / long hoods is not all that great, they still see it a Porsche and at best ignore it... The bmw 2002 or the Alfa however draw genuine smiles all the time, the bimmer especially... The porsche brings disdain... And those people don't know I'm a prick !!! ;-) |
You know it's kind of funny, We went to a PCA meeting here in Kansas City a few years ago and not a single person talked to us. It was like we had the plague because we weren't in a new Porsche.
|
Yeats ago, my old Pen Pal Howard Shoemaker wrote; "You can tell there's a PCA dinner meeting by all the Japanese cars in the parking lot."
