Your favorite automotive history book(s)

So I was at a seminar recently where a speaker on alzheimers and dementia said I should read for an hour each day.

Problem is that I really don't enjoy reading most subjects other than work related reading where I am trying to learn something or find the answer to something.

The only exception to this would be books on automotive topics and automotive history. I'm not talking about coffee table picture books but rather non-fiction books.

Anyone have a favorite automotive book they have read?

Have you used Amazon Books before? or have a digital reader? Their library of books is huge.

Yes and yes. Most recently I read "On a clear day you can see General Motors" by John DeLorean.

The Arsenal of Democracy: FDR, Detroit, and an Epic Quest to Arm an America at War

A great read - not a typical war book but how Edsel ford and the other Detroit automakers re-tooled their factories for the war effort.

I am a big true-crime fan on kindle books. My kindle prob has close to 200 that I have read.
If you search thru the auto books..the user reviews are very helpful

I have really enjoyed "The Last Open Road" series by BS Levy. Post-war sportscar racing in America.

Everyone seems to love the novel, "The Art of Racing in the Rain."

Denis Jenkinson "A Passion for Porsches" is a good read. I haven't read it in years but has him traveling throughout Europe in his 356.

Excellence was expected, first edition by Karl Ludvigsen. The only Porsche book I kept. Gave away the others.

Porsche 917 The Undercover Story, excellent read from first hand experience, quite technical but easy to understand

Just bought 'Investigation into The Development of German Grandprix Racing Cars 1934-1939' all about the era of streamlining and was written for the British Intelligence in 1947.

Ross Brawn's book 'Total Competition : Lessons In Strategy From F1' is also an interesting read, give a very good insight into the behind the scenes action of modern F1

Allen Nevins books about Ford are good. I have 25 or 30 automotive corporate histories in my office. I've read them all, and it's hard to come up wth a favorite. The only really bad one is a two volume set about Clessie Cummins.

"Stealing Speed" by Matt Oxley is the story of how the development of the two stroke MC engine got from Nazi Germany to the West. Not long but a good read.

Any of the old Jackie Stewart books.

He is very good at explaining not only what, but why.
