Surfing vehicle - Daily driver recommendations wanted
Although I get on the waves once in a while, this is for someone at work.
He's gotten into surfing the last couple of years and he's looking for a good daily driver that that he could throw a couple of boards in. Doesn't have to be new. Easy on the Wallet maintenance wise. Can take the family along. Commutes about 40 miles a day. East coast weather friendly. Any recommendations out there?

I've been looking at older Lexus LX470's, 4wd, seem bullet proof, plenty of room, not the best MPG, tough. Put some knobby tires and a rack on it, drive onto the beach and surf.

Volvo wagon, perhaps one of the cross country versions.

I really prefer a truck to having a bunch of stuff on the roof.
For my Tacoma I put the tail gate down, clamped on a Yakima rack and was good to go...worked great for my surfboards and kayaks. When I was kayaking a lot, I also had a fork clamps for a bike next to the kayak holder so I could ride back to get my truck. Lots of innovative racks available. ![]()

Get a wagon and the board(s) go inside. Easy peasy. Our surfin' son rolls that way.

Danny's friend may also want to get laid once in a while
![]() For me it was a marriage of convenience for the larger kayak and also the bike. That and I needed a truck. I also found, because I was a slob, that wet, sandy wet suits, towels, etc, were better in the bed.

I use my Westy. I can change into and out of the wet suit in comfort and privacy, wash up in the sink, and even heat up a nice cup of cocoa on a cold day.
Meanwhile, everyone around me is struggling to get out of their wet suit while simultaneously holding a towel around them so they don't flash bystanders. Then they have muddy feet when they're done changing. It makes me feel smug. ![]() ![]()

^^ I don't think there's a more perfect vehicle for surfing or snowboarding than a VW Westy :^)
