What are lifted pickups good for?

I suppose it's the redneck version of hotrodding. I have no use for a lift on my F250 diesel, it already sits too high to reach over the side for something in the bed, and loading firewood is done with a frontend loader, not by hand.

The difference is, I use my truck to haul, and pull stuff, not try to impress anyone.

The guy in the Camry sounds like a hot head/nut job.

However the guy in the truck is lucky he didn't get arrested too.

I have to be courteous to everyone when I drive the truck. So I give a wide buffer of safety to pedestrians, bicycles, little old ladies with walkers, the homeless, paper boys, etc etc. I just sit in the cab and smoke my stogies and chill out. But if someone wanted to play bumper cars with me, I have something like 20K pounds of steel to play with. This kid ran into me once in a parking lot and his little car looked like a furby vomited car guts on itself.

Definitely kept the hot head from driving away before the cops arrived. ;)

Impressing is what folks buy Porsches for.

I thought folks buy Mustangs to make an impression? I mean, they make impressions with them all the time...in trees, curbs, other vehicles, pedestrians, etc. :D

I've got a buddy with a fairly new F250, and that thing is huge. They do lose some utility when they are so tall that it's hard to get some things into them. It seems weird that trucks have gotten so big. It's not like they have to be that big to do what they do.

On this I agree..today's "small" Toyota Tacoma is roughly the same size a a full sized Chevy or Ford from the mid 70's...

I knew a guy who had a mildly lifted truck, and his wife got it in the divorce. He was a drunk, and God knows what she was on, but one day they were arguing about the kids on the phone. She drove over to his house, and tried to drive through it. Literally.

He tried to get between the truck and the house, so she ran him over. Literally. I thought he was kidding me, until he pulled his shirt up, and I could see the tread marks on his chest like they were embossed on. Nice well defined welts, diagonally across his torso.

I don't know why he isn't dead, but she missed his head, and I guess the ground was soft and muddy. The two 4 YO twins would normally have been in the room that she demolished, watching TV, but they were in the kitchen having dinner.

What fun. I looked at the house, and helped him to put together an insurance estimate. That was about 10 years ago.

When in HS, 1976, friends Dad had a C30 pickup truck. Not C10 or C20, but C30. It was huge. He used it to pull a 5th wheel cattle trailer. It had 7/8 ton running gear which was as big as he could get without going to dual wheels in the rear. It looked like a regular pickup, except it was large enough His dad, mom, sister, him, and me could all sit on the bench seat an it was not crowded.

4 inch suspension lift 34" tires. Went off roading all the time in it.
Dirt, mud, snow, trail blazing though the woods, fun.

according to the stickers I've seen the trucks are lifted to keep the fat girls out.

I am always perplexed. What is the point of raising the cab way up if the axle to ground distance stays the same or is increased only slightly with bigger tires? Visibility and suspension articulation I guess are the only benefits but I don't see it significantly increasing ground clearance much. And how much suspension articulation are you getting if you keep stick axles? The monster trucks and race trucks all run independent wishbones on all 4 corners.

As for the bed height, IMO it's unfortunate all modern pickups have such a high profile. My 1500 Silverado bed sides are too tall to reach over to put something in or get something out. Next time you see a pre-90's pickup take note of how accessible the bed is.

It depends if you are just doing a body lift or a suspension lift. Then there is a mild lift accomplished simply through the use of tires with much larger sidewalks.

Tacomas have A Arm suspension in the front

Longer travel shocks and other suspension parts to get the suspension more range and clearance. that plus simply clearance at the body for bigger tires

But some people do it just for the looks
