Cool Smyth - did you build it? They are working on a version for the Dodge Charger now.

A friend of mine is doing a TDI Jetta to pickup convert. Really nice kit. Not sure of the maker.

I bet if a manufacturer built something like this, it would sell like hotcakes

Being front wheel drive, the payload is limited. Honda Ridgeline is also fwd, but you can get it with awd.

Hmmm, I don't know about that. I'm not sure that mini-trucks have ever sold that well. And I don't know that things like the el camino and ranchero were huge sellers either. I think to sell something of that size, they'd need to give it big wheels and tires and a jack it up to give it a more truck-like stance.

Did you miss the mini truck craze in the 80s?

I had a Datsun king cab, wish I still had it

And have owned many Rabbit Trucks (it was never called a "Caddy" over here and the European version was different than the ones designed and built here.)and would love to build another one m

They already do! In Brazil. Hundreds of thousands of VW Saveiros are all over the continent..
I saw them everywhere in Argentina and Chile
