Everybody has a six pack, whether or not you can see them is another story!!
I'm 56, 5'11 now 185, a few years ago I weighed 225... One day after a wake, I realized that Id been going to more wakes than weddings, and childhood friends of mine were passing.. It was a slap in the face, wake up moment... I go the the gym 5-7 day a week, cardio, weights, I also started Yoga... don't laugh Yoga will wear you the eff out.. but you do get better balance and flexibility... Anyway I know I have a good six pack.. I can feel it, you cant see it though...... Having lost a bunch of weight, I have excess skin.. which looks fugly... |
I know I have one and a pretty decent one at that as I do a lot of ab work...I can feel them if I flex my abs. Actually after a decent core work out they do pop out and are clearly visible but after about a half hour the effect fades somewhat.
....just another old guy trying to prove to himself that he's "still got it"....lol!....carry on people! ;) |
There are dietary tricks you can do to look more cut, as delineated above. Fast a day a week, where you just drink water and some juice so you get some calories. About all I do is walk the dog and play basketball with a 10 year old a few days a week.
Everyone should do some ab work daily. I never used to do that, until I was in a car wreck, then I sort of had to, just do the maintenance stuff for that. For the abs to look good, you just have to drop fat. I am fortunate in that I can still drop weight fairly easily. Body weight is not always the best metric to track, particularly if you are lifting weights sort of fit. Muscle is more dense than fat. When I was going to school, I commuted by bicycle, and rode in the headlands every weekend when I was in San Francisco. I was right around 200, with thighs that were about as big as my waist, which makes it tough to buy pants, but I was very fit, could play full court basketball all day long. After a few hours, you'd run out of people that could keep up, but new ones would come along. |
You guys who still have some abs ought to pop up a pic or two...show off a bit.
Why not?...I would if I had any to show. Good motivation for us old farts who at one time worked at having Adonis bodies. :cool: |
Nope. Since I married Marie here excellent cuisine has ruined every hope of maintaining even something reminding of a six-pack. No complains here though. Life is good. :)

Six packs are over rated. Nothing like the good 'ol one pack.

I show my six pack to the cashier at the beer store at least once a week....
At 54 I can drop weight pretty easily and was down to 170 lbs at 5'10" last year before summer. Was in a bicycle accident at the beginning of June and kind of took me off the rails as far as fitness goes. I could easily put on and take off my 501s without undoing the top button. Right now? No! It seems that as I age, it is still easy to get strong and at least maintain fitness but my flexibility sucks. Much easier to be injured and a much longer recovery time. |
at 44 I still show a six pack.
I mean why waste a paper bag that i'm just going to throw away when I get home with my twisted tea anyways? who are we trying to kid walking out of a beer/wine store with a paper bag hiding our six beers? |
Six packs are minor league. I've got a keg!

The largest pair of pants I had when I started was 38" waist, now I wear 31"-32 waist (two pairs of jeans, different brands). That's a 6"-7" difference I'd like to improve upon. Going to be difficult clothes shopping below at a 30" waist (or smaller). A problem I look forward to.:) I've been bouncing between 175 and 170 for two years as the fat to muscle ratios swapped ends. I don't put a lot of value into what the scale says, the mirror tells me all I need to know. I am outside any normal measuring convention, only 5'-5" tall, broad rib-cage for my size, wide pelvic bones for any size, short arms, etc..... I'm just squat nothing I can do about that. My frame work is old school body builder, not graceful slinky lanky Men's Heath magazine cover type. Last time I had a six-pack I was as a young teenager riding my 10-speed bike six hours a day (God I was bored that summer). Currently I'm forming a crease down the middle of my belly, at the side are forming a slight shelf inward at the rib-cage, then below 3-4 slight creases starting to form at the sides. I cannot see too much beyond that, just too much belly hair. :o I still have remnants of love handles on my lower back/side but they are defined now, no longer swimming in a sea of flesh and skin fat. The battle between building more muscle mass (forming a chest) and getting rid of fat is a dancing act which I'm always struggling to take the lead on, but sometimes my body has other ideas. In general, summer is more cardio, winter more weight training. Lately I've attempted to increase my protein intake to build up muscle and it's working but it's difficult watching the numbers on the scale go up in the meantime. I'm getting complements all the time on my progress, and people treat me differently, it's hard to explain but it's all ego building. Don-Ro's diet examples are great, thanks. It's a delicate thing to cut body fat without losing muscle mass. I read recently read that putting a heaping table spoon of peanut butter (or whey power if you can take the bloating) for protein in your morning oatmeal is a good idea. I like the peanut butter much better than trying to add hemp protein to oatmeal (used in smoothies with good success). In boxing and UFC matches guys at my height are about 136 lbs, but like I said I'm a more compact and squat package than most. I'd be delighted to be 150-155 again. That's another 20 lbs to go for me, and I think most of it will be dietary changes. Hard to keep up with aggressive workouts if you don't have enough fuel in your body. So my plan is to get the muscle mass I want, then do what I can to preserve it while cutting out the calories and doing more cardio in the process. I've been skinny before in my youth and tried to build muscle mass. Now I'm heavier and will try to lose just the fat. I think you can realize your goal from either direction, just takes a lot of learning to find what works for you. I don't care to have a well defined six-pack, but it would be nice to have more definition and no love handles. Psychologically I've never identified with bullies and jocks while in grade school, never wanted to build up too much for fear of being and acting like them. Just enough to hold my own was good enough. Now I'm over that and pretty proud that I'm in better shape than any of them that I've met lately. Call me a late bloomer. When I get my six-pack I'll let you all know, how about that? It's going to happen. EDIT: Opinions on dairy products including milk and yogurt in your diet are welcomed. It's a confusing issue for me. |
kachi that's awesome!

Ok, I probably shouldn't have but I did it. As you can see my chest is falling, I've gotten thicker in the middle, and definition isn't that good anymore. But I'm lucky since what I have is natural & not all that bad for 74, however this pic was taken last year. I can still do lots of things younger people can't, but who knows for how long & if it might translate into a longer, still active life. Like Don said, common & do it you guys! This was without any gut tightening.

. "...& not all that bad for 74,..." . Marv, That's awesome!!! I'm 71 and I'd swap you any day and wash your cars for a month. Impressive. You look in your 30's - 40's. . Thumbs up. |
68 here, at 5'11 1/2" and 178lb, shrank 1/2 " already and waist easy 34, can fit 33 but 34 is easier. I would say a 2 pack cuz I can pinch it.
I still do weights every day and my 20 push ups and sit ups. If I don't do them, I could not do my job adjusting those 250- 300 pounders. Golden rule" use it or lose it". getting old isn't for wossies, it takes more work than being young. |

You seem to have that body type or core which is adaptive to almost any sport. I have more fat than you which is a bigger challenge. All you have to do is a bunch of push ups, some sprinting or swimming and you are golden. |
"I could not do my job adjusting those 250- 300 pounders."
~~~~~~~~~ Are you a med tech? |
Just exercise, jog, walk, cut out cheese, milk and bread. Sit ups help. Go lift weights,,,etc...
|
At 5'11" if I was down to 175# I would feel to sick to do anything, but my lean body mass is 164#. I feel best around 192#. Been doing Muay Thai (Thai boxing) with my daughter. I can definitely feel it in my abs and sides. I do not have a visible six pack and the way I am built I don't know that I every will.
