How do you guys keep your keys sorted?
My main keychain makes me look like a janitor. I took a few keys off of it to lighten, and promptly lost them.
The rarely used keys, such as the Porsche and Benz, et are on separate keychains. What do you guys do? Do you use key fobs? What about the Porsche key, how do you use and store it? |
Porsche keys go in the safe which is on the way to the garage. Daily driver keys sits on the table with my wallet. Each set has a house key and maybe toolbox or car cover key as well.
|
I leave each one in the car that it starts.
|
Have a different key chain for each car (with a different "trinket" for ease of recognition). Only thing on that chain is the key and fob for that car. All key chains sit in our "key bowl." I don't need keys for anything else.
|
Yeah, I look like a janitor too! Truck key, DD key, MR2S key, office keys, house key, shed key, bedroom key, cash box key...
|
I have two key rings, one with the '84 Porsche, and one with the '86 Porsche.
I split my keys between. Keys that are duplicates in shape, but not what they fit, go on the different key rings to ease confusion. The seldom used ones I have specific places to leave them where they can be gotten to. |
Only key(s) I carry is for the vehicle I drive that day.
Home & office have keypads & remotes. |
house key, mom's house key, car key.
work keys (4 different filing cabinets and 2 real doors) are on a separate lanyard p-car keys are on a separate fob in one of two places.... just don't remember which. need to get them and put them in the safe. |
One ring, truck, house, car, gate. Porsche keys are in a coffee cup on the kitchen table. I went through a drawer one day and threw out about 20 keys. A lot of them I had no idea what they were for.
|
I use one of these. You have 4 seperate rings to store keys and you can add or remove in seconds.....

I have a different key ring for every use. My "Tundra key" has the three commercial building keys on it - front door has one 1/8' hole drilled in it, middle door has two holes, back door has 3.
My Volt has a house key and I carry the Tundra Key only if I'm going to the office. Same with any of my Porsches. I hate carrying a ton of keys. |
Every door on my house and shop is the same key, high end locks, cost me but it's worth every penny. My out building padlocks are also all keyed the same.
Low use keys are in my key cabinet. Then I have separate fobs for my daily drivers and my summer cars, the most I have is 5 keys on one fob. |
I try to keep the number of keys that I carry to a minimum, and have no fob or chain to add extra bulk. I do have a couple of extra items (3) on the ring, but that is carefully considered. If I have or need extra keys besides those, they go on a separate ring that usually does have a fob or chain of some sort.
If you look like a janitor, then you need to pair down some and have one ring for the most common stuff, house and car, and another ring or two for the rest. |

The truck alone has 4 keys. Office uses 2. Construction yard has 2, so I'll be stuck with those for at least the next year. The new office - lord only knows. I'm going to put a key vault in the new place, so that I can keep the keys locked and sorted in there. But the problem remains that I have to lock everything. Too many damn thieves.

Re-key a swing door lock: Re-key Locks Easily with Kwikset SmartKey | How to Re-Key a Lock Yourself in Seconds
I haven't used these locks, but it might be one option. Kwikset has evolved in quality and Schlage has de-evolved. Both are similar in price and quality around the box stores here. IMO. |

Also makes it simpler if someone needs to grab a set to shuffle a car. |
So I read somewhere that you shouldn't really have a bunch of all your keys together that you carry around in case you lose it. Plus to your point it gets bulky.
So all car keys are separate. House keys are separate. Safe keys are separate. |
All the locks to my house, shop and my parents are keyed the same way. This way we can get in if keys are ever lost. I have that key attached to every car keys. This way I really only carry only two keys at any given time. Its even easier with keyless entry. One house key on the ring attached to the keyless fob, that's it. Keys for the rental? Now, that's a pain in the ass as they are separated and marked and numbers. If not, I'd be there for sometime.

I use Keysmart, one for each car, just keeps keys for doors in a neat folding aluminium frame and the car fob attached. Www.getkeysmart.com
|
No problem. I only have three keys. Home, job, car. :D
|
Have some sort of aversion to carrying a lot of keys. Have keys down to a bare minimum.
2 keys on a ring for everything at the house including the house. Cars each have a head with either light or alarm fobs. Carry each vehicle key separately only when driving that vehicle. Usually only carry the two house keys on a ring and a car key when I go anywhere. Used to have two more on the house keyring for work, but work went to photo ID cards with RFID for Everything. Keep it in my wallet like a credit card. Can hold wallet near the readers without removing card. Keep stuff like wallet, change, pocket knife, rings, keys, etc. in tray on my dresser. Load pockets when getting dressed. Used to leave keys in console of each car for that car. Then found garage overhead doors with an opener are kinda easy to get into. So went to keeping car keys with the rest of my pocket lint in bedroom. Also keep the cars locked in the garage and keep garage door into house locked. Would like to RFID all my house locks and just carry a card for that as well. And keyless entry and drive on all the cars too. Keep the extra copies of all the active keys in a fireproof, waterproof lockbox with valuables and paper work like titles. |
Car keys separate. I have (2) key rings - house key, mailbox key, office keys. I work in a manufacturing plant and I have a key ring for equipment, gates, doors, etc. That key ring stays in my office.
I don't like carrying around allot of keys. |
I hate a big wad of keys so my three cars are separate. Truck and minivan are on one ring with a house key and keys for the hitch lock on the truck. House exterior garage side door and garage doors are on a keypad. If I don't know what it goes to I chuck it.

These are my keys. These are all of the keys I carry. I have had that same set of keys in my pocket for almost 20 years. One key for work, one for home, one for the 911 and two for the El Camino. Whey Chevy decided it should take two keys to operate a car I have no idea. They are complexly worn smooth. I have had that style of Porsche key in my pocket for 42 years. If they are not in a key tumbler they are in my pocket from the time I get dressed to the time I go to bed. I have never once in my life lost a key. I never go looking for my keys because they are right in my pocket. |
DO NOT just hang them on a nail in the kitchen or room or hallway..
neighbors house got broken into, they stole all his car keys too, so he was screwed . |

I have a car key and an office key. My house has a digital keypad.
I keep a separate ring of keys in my car. Shop, storage unit, and my dad's house. I hate carrying keys, and I hate having twenty keys hanging from the ignition. |
Each car key has one house key attached. The Cayenne key has an additional key for the trailer hitch lock.
All other keys for home or work stay at home or work. |
And remotes too. I have (counting)....5 garage door opener type remote controls. Two for gates, 3 for roll up doors.

Now work is a different deal, wife jokes that I look like a janitor, I actually have to split it to two key rings, one for doors and one for cabinets. I think I read somewhere it is bad for your ignition to have too many key... that is for us old timers who still have cars with keyed ignition ;) |
