Went for a ride in a ridiculously fast car today......

...co-worker's 2008 SL600. My God, these things have no shortage of torque. And at current prices, they're very tempting. Can't imagine what the AMG version is like. That's all.

I've never ridden in or driven any year of SL, but I've always liked the way they look.

Yes, they are wonderful, but those cars are complete service nightmares, which is why the pricing. I have 2 mid nineties normally aspirated 600's and they are much simpler but I still budget 3k annually for repairs.

They do go like stink though.

If I could budget 5k/yr, I'd likely have an s65.

Buy a vette, go faster, costs less.

I had an HD Nightster with intake/tune/exh., made 78whp and 57wtq. Drag raced a bi-turbo SL Amg which used all driver aids...i beat the car by a bike length (well past qtr mile run) before i lifted bc the bike was reaching its limits and began to shake.

yea so, my buddy w the benz was as surprised as i

moral, theyre not as fast as they feel

My M3 is probably faster than the Benz (I don't need no stinkin' Vette, just the engine). It's got a better power to weight ratio. I was just caught off guard by the car though. I hadn't paid much attention to what Mercedes was up to for a long time. I'm well aware of the SL65, but thought the SL600 was naturally aspirated.

MB V-12s have been boosted since the early 2000s, (maybe '05?), and they pull very hard. The ones from the '90s are N/A and a lot slower.

I'm guessing that the SL in the Harley race was an early 2000s SL55. Anything newer would be a lot quicker.

Is this the one where the dealer wants $1400 to change plugs? And it's like every four years?

Even the 90's 600 still feels fast today IMO. What's most striking about a Merc V12 is the combination of power and smoothness, it's very sublime.

Just to be a wet blanket................ maintenance costs appreciate as precipitously as purchase price depreciates.
