I have an 07 Chevy 2500 Duramax/Allison 325k towing 20k.
Nothing done other then maintenance, nothing.
Oh I did put in an alternator. Still drives like new
Not just the best truck I've owned out of 20 or so The best thing I've ever owned.
Wish life was half as dependable as that truck

As mentioned it's up to you if you want to deal/want a solid axle front.
I would personally go with the cummins if it's stock and not abused. Kinda rare out here in AZ though

Thanks. You guys convinced me on the Chevy. As much as I like the Cummins and are bias due to the face that I had zero problem with my old truck, I will give the Chevy a try. I called up the seller (older guy who's done with traveling) and bought it. Nice guy and he's holding it for me. I haven't seen the trucks yet, but will drive out to do the deal tomorrow. He assures me that the truck is really clean.

From the couple of pics he sent me, the interior is immaculate and there are only a few door dings on the outside.

Yep, stock truck. Retired engineering owns it.

Enjoy that Cheby, Jeff. It sounds like a nice work truck.

He's not talking about an early Duramax. He's talking about an LBZ, ('06-newer), which is a fully sorted and de-bugged motor that runs forever hooked up to the best transmission ever put in a PU truck, the 6-speed Allison, (came out w the LBZ in '06). Bone stock has 650 lbs. of torque and will snap your neck back as it's always in the right gear. Always. Makes a Dodge seem like a POS in comparison, sorry.

Not surprised at all but very happy for you. It's like the automotive equivalent of a German Shepard that lives forever. :)

I hear those LBZs are the best of the Duramax with the Allison 6 spd. Clean ones and none modded ones are hard to come by.

Yeah, done with the dirty work trucks. My men are doing that now. We get almost everything delivered. If they drop it, they owe me a new one. Easier on my stress level and easier on our backs.

I don't really need the truck, but want it to haul kayaks, bikes, and camping stuff for the kids.

I say any truck that defies gravity is a truck worth owning! :D

I drove the truck last night and bought it. I have to say this, that Chevy is one heck of a truck. A very comfortable and extremely quiet rocket ship compared to my old 93 Cummins diesel. It almost felt a little soft.

Any diesel mechanic you guy recommend in LA. Dennis? I llike to have all fluids changed out and get after some suspension rubber parts. It really isn't necessary, but I want to get it done.

Hows the truck working out? I found a 2001 that is interesting. BTW how many miles are too many for these? Seems like an early one with recent injectors should (could?) be ok.

daepp 11-16-2017 07:47 PM

Just drive the twin turbo diesel F250. Just once. Just invest a small amount of time - I think you will be very happy you did!

When some friends needed a new tow vehicle for their house (they travel the Ren Faire circuit for a living) they surveyed the camp ground parking lot and went and got a Dodge with the Cummins.

The whole group abuses their vehicles - my friends have close to 100k on theirs and their big repairs have been tire related, which is admittedly a pain on a doolie set up

Tell you this, I love this big thing. It hauls everything I need and then some. The most important thing is that my kids can ride in the crew cab comfortably. My fuel mileage is 21mpg on cruise at 75mph going through Death Valley this summer. It has plenty more power then my old Dodge going up the steep long grades. It sucked in town because its just too big for our little parking spots. City MPG is 13-14, that's driving very easy.

VincentVega 11-17-2017 05:20 AM

Cool, thanks. mpg isnt too important, dont we all say that at first?, but I wont complain. More interested in reliability and hauling/loaded capacity. I love the idea of a new one but its just not in the cards.

I still have my 3/4 12V Cummins with 128,000 on the motor. I am told that's just broken in. Its been well taken care of if you are interested in a work truck? I have all the service receipts. Its just sitting here since my kids have out grown the little back seat. Have not been active in trying to sell it because selling cars or just stuff in general is a PITA

VincentVega 11-17-2017 09:47 AM

Yes, your truck would be great. Really a distance thing. I do need to hook up with Jim sometime....
