live next to a white dwarf (dead) star? Why spend gazillions of dollars going to a place like this knowing that the planetary system is failing? Instead of sending humans, just send Hillary Clinton, no loss!

From size, wavelength and intensity of light they can tell what kind of star it is.

From distance from planet to star they can tell if planet is in habitable zone.

Habitable zone simply means liquid water can exist if planet has an atmosphere.

We don't know much about these planets, but we didn't know much about the other planets in our solar system 100 years ago either. We'll learn more.

Practical use of this information? Dunno but lots of useful things come from basic research, eventually.
