Thoughts on this Targa?

77 Targa with a Euro 3.2 popped up on craigslist. Just a mile from my house. Car is rough in places. Are beast like this really going for $24.5 K?

The ad says 5 cylinders. Maybe with another cylinder it will be more money?!:)

I might be wrong but I think that is member nineball's car. Name is Kris. Very nice guy.

Good price for the car.

You know much more than I do about current pricing, but there there seems to be some potential cost centers in this car.

Don't get me wrong, if my 560SL was gone (I am getting it ready for sale now) I'd probably make an offer on the car should HD walk and a through PPI allay some concerns.

Interesting.

Prices have gotten nutty on those cars. That said, it looks ok in the pictures and I believe him that it pulls like freight train w that motor in that body. Doesn't say which 915 trans it has but if it's the original '77 w shorter final drive, it would be a hyper monkey in the low gears and seriously fast up to the top. :)

Just FYI, '74 was the last year for the 7:31 R&P.

Just a few short years ago I remember a 3.2 with harness and DME was $5500. Then it was $6500. Then $8500. Now it's $10K. As a euro engine, as long as he has the correct DME, that should be worth $11K to $12K alone.

If the car has little to no rust, it's worth the asking price all day long. Interior is what is is, I'd find a driver seat and drive the car.

The one cost center I see is if you really wanted to use the 3.2 power, strongly and consistently, I'd consider putting a Wevo 1 piece bearing plate in it and maybe 915/73 side cover. Would go a long way to needing a trans rebuild down the road.

Correct DME with part number. No provision for O2 sensor but Sal Carceller could add it if necessary.

Thanks. It's been a while. :)

It would of course still be very quick.

HardDrive 02-27-2017 09:56 AM

@shaun, nineball's car looks similar, but its an 83 SC.

svandamme 02-27-2017 09:57 AM

Do you have a gold chain to wear, if you do , go for it.
Over here for 25K i can get a rolling chassis...

HardDrive 02-27-2017 11:41 AM

Wow, guy just pinged me. Say he already has offers and wanted to know if I could make an offer today.

BK911 02-27-2017 11:51 AM

I like the color combo.

Gogar 02-27-2017 11:53 AM

I'd say that price isn't loony, for the reasons Shaun mentioned.

I bet a 3.2 in that car is fun.

I remember when I went for a ride with DonDavis and he had a longhood with a 3.2, it was a pretty crazy smile-machine.

greglepore 02-27-2017 12:22 PM

Only 200lbs between that and a Carrera that the 3.2 came out of. You can probably get a close to stock Carrera Targa for similar money. But yeah, its not ridiculously overpriced.

Put a low boost turbo on it and you'd really have a hoot.

1990C4S 02-27-2017 12:48 PM

That looks like a fun car priced like a fun car. Don't mistake it for a collectable car.

BeyGon 02-27-2017 12:55 PM

It's old enough you shouldn't have smog issues.

Baz 02-27-2017 03:26 PM

Nice looking Targa! Love the color too.

The 3.2 is quite a nice upgrade.

Looks like most everything else is stock - which I would consider a positive valuation factor.

Good luck, whatever you decide!

HardDrive 02-27-2017 03:52 PM

Evidently the price is just fine. Guy called me and asked if I wanted to make an offer because he already had multiple offers on the table.

That's a great way to say it.

LakeCleElum 02-28-2017 02:11 AM

I have a high compression 3.2 with cams and early exhaust in a 73.5 targa that has short gearing.....Too much Fun to ever sell with short gearing......Happy Times.
