Sports at my old high school
I graduated from Paterson Eastside in 1970. It was crap then and apparently it still is. We didn't have corruption back then but we were focused more on avoiding violence than getting an education. The State took over years ago but the school still isn't out of trouble.

I just don't get that sort of crap in HS sports.
It's ridiculous.

I played football and baseball in high school and I don't recall any funny business of any kind.
Except maybe the local powerhouses like Servite and Mater De getting all the best athletes despite the fact that many of them came from lower income families that could not afford the very expensive private tuition. The coach in that article should not be anywhere near a school, he should be in jail. Last edited by sammyg2; 02-25-2017 at 07:16 AM.. |

When I went to school over 50 decades ago, I didn't see this...not in my school anyway.
Today, I often wonder. It seems that the usual powerhouse schools are involved in the state championship football game year after year. I've heard rumors of parents of standout grade school kids getting job offers they can't refuse in certain communities, but haven't seen any press mentions of the practice.

only "sort of". We did have one standout player in my class...scored the only touchdown in the annual north/south shrine all star game, and got a free ride with the Ducks. His problem at the college level was that he was going for the same position as a guy named Mel Renfro.

Yeah, I know. Just keep breathing. Dunno why I typed in that zero. Actually, it was 56 years ago. "over 5 decades" doesn't sound as bad. Naw, it's still bad...but so far, it beats the alternative.

For my freshman & sophomore years, I went to a private Catholic high school that always fielded top-ranked sports teams. The Monsignor that ran the place was a sports fanatic and used his high-profile teams as a publicity machine for the school. He personally recruited hot prospects right out of area grammar schools and provided free tuition, and assistance to the family if need be, to get the kids on board.

The lists of athletes from those two schools are crazy. My high school's much shorter list is probably more typical. (Woodside High, CA)
Julian Edelman: NFL Rich Kelly: NBA John Naber: Olympic swimmer Lillian Watson: Olympic swimmer That's it.

Can the Vikings return Matt Kalil to Servite? We could probably get a Kickstarter campaign together to pay his tuition if they'd take him back.

I only remember a few that went to my high school. Lots of famous bands though.
Marilyn Briggs, better known by her professional name Marilyn Chambers. Christopher Lloyd. Linda Blair from The Exorcist, was in my home room. |

Problem solved! A couple of guys from Minneapolis named Teddy and Sam texted and said they'd pay whatever tuition it took to send Kalil back to Servite. They'll even throw in the airfare.
![]() No athletes or rock stars graduated from my high school. One Air Force Acadamy graduate, a medical doctor, a few lawyers, lots of teachers, lots of engineers, and a few Ph.Ds. I don't even know of an athlete who graduated from a D I program. We had about 250 kids, grades 7-12. I suppose the odds were against us having a professional athlete.
