Would you support giving social media an age limit...say 18?

after hearing yet another story of a child attempting suicide after being bullied relentlessly on social media I have found that I question the wisdom of allowing children to use social media at all.

So question is would you support making all social media an 18 + thing?

There already IS a minimum age, but the parents dont care what their kids do on the smartphones and computers.
Also: social media sites should be held 100% responsible for the content posted, they are the publisher. And I dont care if there are a gazillion posts made every second. Then have a lot of people checking it and dont have that billion dollar earnings!

It would be impossible to enforce.

I agree the platforms have some responsibility to moderate offensive content.

However, the platform is not the publisher any more than the phone company who provides the facility for people to communicate "publishes" phone calls.

Is Apple the publisher because their iOS product contains a messaging app?

No

That'd be one hell of a slippery slope.

Social media does not cause suicide. People have been bullied for as long as there have been people. Stop raising snowflakes and get them off of social media and doing something productive.

Parents should not allow their kids to use social media any more than alcohol or marijuana.

Maybe we should have the gubmint make all our decisions for us so we could completely eliminate that old fashioned notion of personal responsibility.
Not.

Every forum owner is responsible for the content that the users post.
Why not FB and Twitter? There is such a discussion ongoing.

I think there IS a difference in voice calls and public written text.

It could be done. Some of the "startups" would not be able to run. So what?
We need restrictions.

You are missing the point that we are going faster and faster. And the human (kids at least) is not made for this media velocity.

And it's totally impossible to put down a phone or turn off a computer!

That may be the case in Sweden, not so in the US.

If a platform owner is aware of illegal activity and allows it to continue things start to get grayer but as a general statement it is not correct with regards to US laws.

In what way specifically is the provision of voice communication fundamentally different than text?

It's not, different implementation of the same concept.

That would be just an awful idea, and I don't even like social media.

It would work about as well as age restrictions on video games.

I played a hell of a lot of Doom when I was a kid, and I turned out okay.

Sammy, what does IDDQD mean to you?

Kids have been bullying each other forever. Kids have been depressed and don't horrible things because of it forever. Putting an age limit on social media won't stop that. It may make it take a different form, but that's about it.

In reality they might be able to defend themselves, not so much on the net.

I know it is impossible ... but I for one would not mind if FB and Twatter and such all disappeared completely.

I have a better idea - set an age limit of 18; after the age of 18, you can no longer use social media.

Yeah we should just be able to ban anything and everything that we don't like.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who feel no one needs to drive anything other than the same color 4 door econobox with a 0.75 litre motor.

Well that would effectively kill off FB since their core demographic is not teens anyway.

The platforms that teens use we have not even heard of and as soon as we do they switch to something else.

Social Media is the equipment, not the problem.

Take away the equipment and the problem remains and just finds a new way.
