Cell Phone - ODB2 Scanner dongles
 

So T-Mobile is selling a dongle that fits in the ODB2 scanner port. They even have a video of all the cool things it does.

1. Creates a WiFi hotspot in the car - OK, no too bad
2. Review all of the messages on the car and notify you of problems - Again not too bad
3. Has GPS, so you can track the car - Scary
4. Can review you car's speed and notify you if you exceed the speed limit - are you kidding me (the video shows a wife reviewing the notification with her husband).

What Orwellian crap? And people will PAY for this?

I know that Verizon has this as well. MAYBE install it on your child's car. But why would you allow your cell company to track you all over town?

My brother has had a similar aftermarket system in his 911 for years.

He's paranoid about the car being stolen so he installed it mostly as a tracking device.

He also acquired a teenage stepson who has made the typical teen "ill advised" decisions so it gives him a bit of extra piece of mind.

Most modern cars are already data logging, not location but certainly speed, acceleration, braking data, which can be subpoenaed in the event of serious accidents.
