Why? What are you planning to do with this saw? Garage shop for cutting general small stuff? I suggest buying a small table saw from Home Depot and have another chop saw to cut things to length.

Shop Smith maybe the company that made a machine like it. I am not sure if they are still around.

It seems that flip saws are outlawed in the US. I was looking to purchase one. It's nearly impossible.

If you have table saws, why not just buy a miter saw or radial arm saw? Why do you need one that does both functions when you already have one that does one of the two functions??

Why do they make these?

To capitalize on the people too cheap to buy the correct tools for the job.

I think for small places like Europe or Japan where space is a premium?

They are NOT cheap. 800 bucks and more.

They are imprecise. In the end, you get what you pay for.

Yeah, they are space savers. You won't find any fine furniture/kitchen woodworker using one.

Took about 12 seconds to find Shopsmith web site.

Last one I saw was Norm on This Old House was flogging them.
