What to do in Shanghai
Off to Shanghai. We have 5 full days.
What should be on our list? Restaurants we should go to? Day trips nearby? |
My list of things to do:
Visit the Bund area. Awesome at night. Take the kitschy tunnel under the water to Pudong. I can give you a great hotel recommendation if you would like. Take the high speed train to Nanjing and visit the Rape of Nanking memorial. Wander around the new buildings in Pudong. Amazing. Go up in that weird building with the spheres for a good vantage point. Air quality is usually poor, so you have to get lucky to see the city. Take the maglev train into Pudong if you're arriving at Pudong airport. This is a MUST! Even if you fly into the other airport, head over to Pudong and take the train roundtrip just because. I've never found any good restaurants. Tried some fusion style places last time we were there last fall and they were just OK. I'm sure there's some great restaurants in the high end hotels on the Bund, but they will be crazy $$$. |
Motion has the highlights. For food you want xiaolongbao "XLB" - shanghai soup dumplings. There are long lists and heated arguments about the best place to get your XLB on. I was there once for Hairy Crab season, a bit overrated for me, but a good time. The Bund is great, well preserved pre-war architecture

Don't miss the "Four Floors of Whores"... ;)
Oh, and if she is the most beautiful girl you have ever seen - she's a boy. |
Here's what our tour visited in 2009:
Yuyuan Garden and the Bund. Tour on the Huangpu River. Dinner at the Central Hotel, whose restaurant Wang Bao He has a history of around 260 years and is the best place to serve Shanghai Cuisine (so they say) Portman Acrobatic Show at the Shanghai Centre Theatre. Jade Buddha Temple Oriental TV Tower Nanjing Road Have fun! |
I'd like to thank everyone except Higgins. :D
|
Is Suzhou worth a day trip?
|
See if you can scrounge up some more hand made woks

To ignore his advice is foolish imo :) |
The former French concession area is nice for just walking around. Sun Yat Sen's residence is somewhat interesting. I've found some fairly good restaurants there.
|
We were there 3 months ago. We did most of Erakad's list, do the river tour at night. We also went to Hangzhou, and my wife really enjoyed the Tea Museum and plantation, I learned the US doesn't get the good stuff, mostly all consumed in China. We missed the Central Hotel, just didn't know about it. We also missed the Four Floors of Whores:rolleyes: Good trip, very long flight from Atlanta.
