Humble Brag.

I've been updating you guys on my daughter and college.

She's having a banner week. She auditioned for and made her schools Varsity orchestra. This is likely the best HS orchestras in the state.

Her ACT score just came in. 33.

That'll get her into an Ivy League school.

That means her full ride to Alabama is a lock and if she wants to go into debt there are really no schools out of reach as far as acceptance.

I had a **** day and this was great news.

Maybe.

If she's an URM, chances will go way up.

If not a URM, maybe Cornell, depending on major.

Also, it's a good score, but if she's not a URM or a recruited athlete, and it's the first time she's taken it, she DEFINITELY should keep studying and take it one more time.

There's lots of reasons for that. I can give you more details, but in a nutshell, (1) many schools will "superscore" the scores, i.e., they will report to the admissions committee the highest scores from each section, regardless of when the tests were taken, (2) the top schools put these test scores into tiers, and a 33 isn't in the highest tier. Bumping to a 34 or 35 is, no question, a difference maker, and (3) there's no downside.

Sounds like she did Great!!!

Way back in 1977 I made 1st Chair Alto Sax in TriState Band. Also played clarinet/saxophone for the local Jr Symphony. Got 1+ on Solo I played for solo contests in 11th grade. It was the same piece a lot of students were playing for their senior recital in college. Auditioned for and was given full scholarship from the music departments to the state school of my choice. And I didn't even have to major in music to get the scholarships. All I had to do was play in their band. Most of the other really good musicians I knew only got offered $250 to $300 scholarships and they were required to Major in music.

What McLovin said is good advice. I got a 35 on my ACT.

Tell her it's worth it, every bit of practice! Being really good was not only a better scholarship offer is was the difference between having to major in music or not. Really didn't want to end up a band director somewhere and is what most music majors ended up doing.

Congrats, you have a lot of reasons to be proud! Just curious, why the emphasis on Ivy League? There are very few professions in which that actually pays off compared to a public university.

Forget the humble, you have every reason to brag.

Good job dad, and congratulations to your daughter.

It's not bragging to share the successes of your children. Like others have said, you have something to be proud of and congratulate you as a father.

Lol, probably a reaction to my gold digging SIL who I love but is one of the most pretentious and shallow individuals you'll meet who intentionally bought in a snobby hood with one of the best school districts in her state and has decided to send my nephew to a private HS at $50k per year because "it'll gauruntee he gets into an ivy league" when all the kid needs to do is bust his ass which I know he already does. He's a good kid.

She's obviously bright! The next challenge will be to look past college to career which should really drive her choice of schools. Some research would likely show that there are few reasons (?none?) to go into debt in order to attend an Ivy.

As so many young people are finding out academic success no longer equates to material success. There is no doubt that education is helpfull and knowledge is worth more than gold. My thinking is avoid going into debt as it is a heavy burden to saddle yourself with.

As I have been saying the old norms of prosperity are falling away. A new paradigm is evolving, one where stability and certainty are no longer a given.

Good job SM for raising a successful daughter. Not a day goes by when I don't think how wonderful daughters can be. Tabs is right about debt. Help her avoid it if you can.

Encourage her to work hard but reward her but not too much.
