Win Vista problem - question

I hate to bring this here, as I bet there is a simple solution that I have overlooked (short of buying a replacement laptop).

My new-ish laptop does not have a CD/DVD drive and I just received some work related training junk that requires that ability. So I dragged out my 2008 Toshiba laptop and fired it up.

I should have left well enough alont, but it had a lot of old junk on it. So I opened the restore CD that came with it and selected "restore to out-of-the-box".

Now I have a nice new install. And the training discs give me an error that says I must get a Service Pack upgrade. Simple... connect LAN wire and select windows update from the start menu.

Not so simple. The computer cannot reach windows update.

I open a IE window and try to get online. Nope. Just failed attempts.
HOWEVER - I can open a command prompt and ping google, yahoo, and any other site. I do have internet connectivity.

Do you guys have any idea why I can ping the net but cannot browse the net (or get to win update) ?

Something in the windows KB sites said that McAfee may be interfering, so I uninstalled it. All of it.

And I disabled all firewalls.

And I went to Administrative Tools and made sure that Windows Modules and Windows Update are both running and set to Auto.

And I lowered my internet security to the lowest setting and whitelisted microsoft.com and windowsupdate.com.

And I turned it off and back on. lol

The date and time are correct?

Have you tried the Microsoft "Fixit"?

Did you boot from F2 to be sure WiFi is enabled ??

Not familiar with that. Will the computer need to have internet access through a browser to use it?

flipper35 03-14-2017 08:36 AM

You probably will need access. You can download the Fixit file and use a flash drive but I think it looks on line for solutions.

Can you transfer the training stuff to a flash drive to use in your newish computer?

I was wondering about this also.
12 DVDs.
I guess I would need to create an 'image' file of each on a USB ?

Overnight it downloaded and installed all except for 3 updates.
Now it won't download those last 3.
And it still won't access internet via browser.

I think Bill Gates has minions on the other end deliberately blocking it so that I will be 'encouraged' to guy a replacement.

You could get a USB external DVD drive for the new laptop? ~$50

masraum 03-15-2017 12:46 PM

Try downloading Firefox. Maybe it's something weird with IE since you do seem to have access.

FWIW.....I just bought this portable DVD player yesterday at Walmart.....

Approx. $70 and works like a charm!

cashflyer 03-16-2017 05:03 AM

Probably not what I need for data DVDs, tho.

Look for a Toshiba Windows 7 operating system discs on eBay or CL. Wipe your drive and load them....or simply get a USB external disc drive. They are cheap.

911_Dude 03-17-2017 05:41 AM

External disk drive. Check amazon. They are dime a dozen.
