Anyone (pay to have) overhauled a 930 engine lately?
I know rates are $160 a hour now.
I also know there is roughly $12,000 in parts and machine work they also mark the cost of parts and machine work by 50%.

Engine forum could give you a better answer
New Mahle P&C $4K Fully rebuilt heads with new valves and springs $1700 Refurbished cams and rockers $800-1000 Crank cleaning, inspection and polish $500 Resize rods $250 Gaskets seals $250 Rod and main bearings $200-500 depending on type Rebuild pump $180 Rebuild/replace turbo: ??$2-4K ?? Add that basic list up Add another 5k for stuff that should be cleaned, refinished, repainted. Then add labor if someone else does all the work. So, 15-25k is not unreasonable for a full rebuild on a car potentially worth $100-150k. If you were looking to sell or hold the high end value, a professional rebuild, receipts, full on refresh will probably be well over $25k Just my thoughts and recent expenses. |

You should link this thread to a new one in the 930 section of the forum.

I'm trying to get subjective results. It seems very few people have actually paid to have this done. Or they don't want to say what they paid. It would be so nice to hear from a few what they did and what it cost them.

My 930 rebuild several years ago was just under 20k in parts and machine shop work. I did the labor. Could have saved 2-4k if I was doing a "stock" build. Last year I had Dawes rebuild the 3.0L engine in my racecar...full monty, but I had just done a DIY top end refresh (which blew up at Sebring) so some of the $ spent on things like heads wasn't in need of full rework again. It cost me something around 25k. Peter Dawe made some changes to the ports, threw in a different cams, dyno tuned the ECU and it made 270whp.

Why wouldn't anyone tell if they had someone do the work?
I just got talking with my wrench a few months ago, its up to about 30k around here for a rebuild. I had my 930 done with all kinds of goodies 15 years ago and it ran me 26k. Dyno number is 365hp at the wheels, pump gas |

My spreadsheet is on my old computer, but I recall, my 930 was about $16K eight years ago with me doing all the cleaning, disassembly and reassembly. That was with new P&C's, cams, turbo, lots of powder coating, hoses, etc. The heads were reworked with new valves, valve guides, springs, twin plug, etc. Oil pump was checked out and crank was checked and polished.

Over hauling most any Porsche engine will cost you an arm and a leg so to speak. Back when I was racing the vintage races, people were spending 50K on a 2L six to be competitive. We did it on a budget with a used engine from Donnie Kravic's shop topping it with used Webers and a used Bosch distributor for about 6K total. My sponser picked up the labor tab so I'd put their name on the top of the windshield. My wife's 1987 930 had a top end rebuild using only new rings and heads cleaned up, new SC cams and a new factory clutch for less than 10K total. I guess it all depends on what is needed and who does the work?
Oh yeah, my budget race engine went 28 race weekends before it broke a stock conn rod! |
