They make an app for that ....

Just talked to my insurance company about my policy and they asked if I had an iphone or an android.

They told me I can get an app that sees my driving and they will give me a discount on my insurance rates.

It's all over but the crying boys .....

scottmandue 04-13-2017 11:22 AM

I think it is Progressive that has a device you can plug into your car and they will lover your insurance? They have been pitching for years and I presume it is a tracking device of some type.

Not sure why you would be concerned about the app, if you don't want it just don't load it on your smartphone.

I'm more concerned about smart cars, I can't confirm but I have heard in the event of an accident the police can connect to your cars computer and see how fast you were going at the time of the accident.

But of course we all drive the speed limit all the time so no reason to worry!

Tervuren 04-13-2017 11:25 AM

Well, I haven't caused a wreck my entire life. Do I get a discount for that? Whatever I'm doing must be working.

BReif61 04-13-2017 11:48 AM

Progressive's gizmo plugs into your OBD port, and presumptively tracks your throttle input % and brake application %, not physical location tracking a la GPS.

If you drive like grandma on her way to church, your rates will go down. If you drive like Ricky Bobby, no change.

I'd win big on the brake application side of things. I mostly just breath on the pedal and let engine braking do the work. However, to get good MPG, I run hard on the throttle with RPM down.

I know that they have had the OBD one for a while. My point is now all you have to do is load an app. Makes me want to leave my phone at home.

Vote with your wallet! No way in hell I'm giving an insurance company access to not only my driving habits but also my location data. All data that they would probably sell to 3rd parties.

RKDinOKC 04-13-2017 12:38 PM

Oh man...just imagine if you had that app and used gmail. They would have agreed access almost everything about you.

I have not caused an accident or had a ticket in 40 years. A deer did decide to commit suicide against my car 10 years ago. That was a no fault claim.

I have pretty good rates.

Only works if you give the app permission to access your location (which I would not do).

Probably works off the phones ESN/MEID.

Was hanging out at a friends house.

My SS buddy kept turning on his phone, checking it, then turning it off.

Asked him what he was doing.

He said he was on PT and they did not need to know when he takes a crap.

:confused::confused:

Says, "we can tell what room of the house you are in from your cell signal"

He may very well have been screwing with me but he is normally a pretty straight shooter so who knows.

I am testing an app from bSafe Mobile right now that prevents calls, texting, or accessing the phine while driving. It has an ODBii dongle that pairs via bluetooth. Great idea, but the execution needs some work.

With 14 year old boys with phones It's a great idea. As an employer with company phoes, I may make it manditory for employees as well.

They also have a fleet version.

recycled sixtie 04-14-2017 08:18 AM

No way would I disclose my driving habits for the sake of a small discount on my insurance.

I recently got a dash cam for my Miata coz it seems like every second time I go anywhere people don't see me. That is all the disclosure the insurance needs as proof from a tech point of view....

sugarwood 04-14-2017 03:52 PM

It does not hook to your phone and it's not an OBD2 device, either.

It's a GPS device. They basically track hard acceleration and speeding.

We got 15% off. Thanks for the free money!

Well, that's one way to look at it!

sugarwood 04-15-2017 05:51 AM

There is a point where tin foil paranoia is self-defeating.
Just like idiots who refuse to use the internet.

OMG, they tracked how fast you drove via GPS??
Next thing you know, you will be put in a prison camp under a communist state!!

Por_sha911 04-15-2017 05:59 AM

Just remember that once freedom and privacy is given away it is almost impossible to get back. This has nothing to do with paranoia or tin foil hats. Just the fact of human history.

john70t 04-15-2017 11:09 AM

um...'sugarwood'...would you mind posting your full name, address, ss, work, income, those of all your family, etc?
If not, then you have a personal privacy threshold you won't willingly cross.
And that is the point of this thread.

"It's not like they would use my information to discriminate, would they?"
(yes they would, because that is the stated purpose of the program)

"But they would discriminate on my behalf, and I will benefit!"
(you ever heard about a free dollar someone desperately needs to get rid of? well neither have I.)

oldE 04-15-2017 12:41 PM

John ,
I think that was the point he was trying to make.
Maybe should have turned on the green font in the second part of his post.
Best
Les
