wtf is up with rolling right turns at red lights?
Some people never even slow down. I swear, 90% of them do it around here. 4 ways stops too. If they think you might get through before them, they just roll through. Potential traffic ticket bonanza for the cops, but they're never around.

Same priks who obstruct vision at stops by 'squeeking by' on the right in their double-tall doosh-mobiles only to realize "Hey! They weren't proceeding forward because the traffic won't allow it! Who knew?!" Awesome. Now I can't see and you can't go.

We have "Red Light Photo Enforced" intersections around here. Which is a cash cow for people who roll through right turns on red. Problem is, every asswipe knucklehead around here can't figure out the difference between those and "No Turn On Red". So most will pull up and just sit 'til the light turns green.

Folks kept doing this in my neighborhood, a while back I guess my neighbor on the corner complained.... Georgia Hwy Patrol used his garage to stake out the corner and ticket those running the stop sign... the coast throughs continue unabated....

Two different issues being lumped together here:
1) one is called a California rolling stop. nothing wrong with that at all, except for the potential revenue generators. 2) The other is people RUNNING red lights or stop signs. NOT same same. I can understand getting all bunched over people running stop lights. Not slowing down much at all, just zipping thru But NOT a California rolling stop. WTF difference would it make? i could come to a complete stop on a red light or stop sign, count to three, and then proceed to turn right. Or I could show down to one MPH, look both ways to make sure its safe, and then proceed. Either way is the exact same, except for the wasted time. It's allowed most of the time here simply out of common sense. Last edited by sammyg2; 04-21-2017 at 01:05 PM.. |

Another one is people who see that you will get to your stop sign before them so they come to a complete stop 20' from their stop sign and rev on through.
I've gotten so tired of all the BS drivers here in So Cal I bought a dash cam. Hardwired it to the 4Runner fuse panel, I just pop it in and it auto records 7.5 hrs in 3 minute segments. Works great, can't believe how clear the video is.

I took some refresher sessions before I did the road test in the UK, to switch from my Canadian one. Good thing too, because until then I didn't know that left turns (LHD traffic) are not allowed under red (not counting turning greens, naturally). In the beginning it felt like a waste of time, but now I do appreciate it, especially considering how complex (compared to North American grid system) intersections can be.
On the other hand, uncontrolled intersections without a STOP sign means yield, so roll through, and the majority of them are this way. They tend to use the stop sign sparingly, in Oxford there are 2 or 3 stop signs total. As a passenger, I used to think all my friends were bad drivers as we approached intersections at more or less full speed and never came to a full stop. The same rules apply in Germany and rest of Europe. So, it's the opposite to how I learned to drive: when it's controlled, stop, easy. When it isn't, no need to waste time coming to a full stop at an empty junction (which I used to do in Canada, because that's the law). Like Sammy's California rolling stop, but legal. I think it just makes more sense, just like roundabouts instead of 4-way stops, or highway speed no-limits.

A rolling stop is okay if there are no pedestrians. If you are walking or running they are dangerous. Drivers that do a rolling stop people are only looking for cars.

Where / when where did you live in Canada? Uncontrolled four ways are not uncommon in low traffic areas in Canada in general, with the same yield rules.

If you make a full stop at a Stop sign in NY; the driver behind you leans on the horn...

That happened to me for a couple weeks after returning from a 3 year tour in Germany. No free right turns over there.

This has been a problem in the past 15 years around here. I rarely see that back then, now they roll it at full speed like if the light is green. Most are younger drivers under the age of 40 that I have noticed.

My pet peeve is when I've got the right-of-way (green light or no stop sign) and some douche does the rolling stop right in front of me to the point where I've got to get on the brakes. But hey, we live in a world where everyone's special, so the rules don't apply to anyone, anymore.

In Vancouver, so probably no chance to see an uncontrolled junction until well into the valley area. Not that sign or no sign would make any difference for the average Vancouver driver. I'm already scared to drive there when I visit this summer! But I digress... I lived in and around Regina, SK for a bit and now that I think about it, I did see them way out in the countryside.

Our city is doing away with 4 way stop signs. Roundabouts are being built everywhere around town. At some of the busier intersections that had several red lights the roundabouts are 3 lanes wide with signage telling you which lane to be in when entering. Fewer accidents because there is in red light to run.

I was in downtown Saratoga Springs the other day and coming up to a green light only to see a trailer truck go through the light at about 40 MPH (clearly he had a red light from his direction). Either he didn't see the light or had total disregard but had I been a few MPH faster I could have been right in the intersection and been T-boned. Makes you think.

Sanctuary city... laws don't matter.
Except parking. Well, unless living in your car/RV.
