Granite counter top epoxy sealant?

Getting granite put in the kitchen. Some places reccomend an epoxy sealant that is supposed to last 15 years. I'm wondering if this is this slick add-on to bump profit or is there truth in it? Anyone have the sealant? I know that without it you are supposed to seal the stone once a year. No big deal to me if there is no major benefit to the sealant.

No experience with epoxy sealant but I have used 511 Impregnator with much success. It is petroleum based, smells terrible when applying, but the product is outstanding and lasts a long time. I used it on granite slab, ceramic tile counters and showers, grout, with great success.

We've had granite kitchen counter top for decades. Never sealed. There have been no issues such as staining or anything else with them. They are very dark(blackish) in color. Bullet proof really. Perhaps there are different grades or types of granite?

Thanks Java. I may go that route if the epoxy is of no value. The stone place gives a guarantee on their sealant and that beats the hassle of putting bad smelling stuff on (my wife goes berserk over any odors -even regular paint).

Anyone else?

Been using ours for eight years now. My wife cleans it & sometimes uses a regular cleaner & sealer. I think it has "gold" in the name. I actually don't think it does much. Unless the granite has a particularly grainy texture, I don't put much stock in sealers.

I think it's great that you are doing what it takes to maintain the stone and appreciate a quality natural surface.

Most people just take them for granite.

I know, sometimes I hate me too ;) SmileWavy

I've used Aqua Mix Sealers Choice Gold for tile grout and granite...based upon recommendations years ago. Trekkor is the resident expert on tile....maybe ask him.
No smell...

Java is correct. Use 511. Not too bad, but I liek the small qt bottle as the gallon formula used to be a little different making it less "good". I sealed all stones for my clients and I show them how easy it is to do that yearly, but not always necessary. I have kids and my wife is not very good at keeping things clean all the time. I have not sealed my granite tops in more then 5-6 years and there's no stain. We abuse it too. STick to 511. Good stuff. I like Oldtyme marble polisher after to get rid of the haze. Thats also great stuff just for cleaning.

+2 for 511.
