My recollection from watching 1980s kickboxing was that the kicks were flashy but the KOs were usually by punch.

You're right. I linked the wrong clip. I meant to link the one where he tells the father about how kickboxing is the sport of the future.

You originally said that some of the guys in your class did both KB and MT which would make them somewhat of a mixed martial artist. A solid MT person (or someone like the guys in your class that do both) would at least have a good chance in an MMA fight. They know how to defend against take downs and clinch up. A KB lacks these skills and only has strikes with zero take downs and zero grappling, which is why an average MMA fighter would simply close the distance, take down, ground & pound, or chock out/submit if he's got BJJ experience.

I see what you are saying. I just meant they can use Muay Thai training for kick boxing but can't use all the aspects of Muay Thai. They don't do any specific kick boxing training.

My Son just started 'rolling' at a local jiu-jitsu gym where they teach and train both traditional and Brazilian as well as kick boxing and traditional boxing. Different instructors for the different disciplines. He loves it, works out there every day except Fridays so he can rest before shooting on Saturdays. He comes home sore but happy. Says the people there are really cool - no thugs trying to impress. everyone is very supportive and wants to help. I would have though that the man juice would run super high and they would be trying to kill each other.

You usually see that attitude at the full on MMA gyms, where most of the guys are training to break out into the sport on a competitive level. Most BJJ dojos are like where your son trains and the guys are super cool and helpful. There's no fun in smashing on a brand new white belt. Its usually the other way around. A 250 lb 23 year old kid who used to wrestle will come in and try to smash on everyone. Its fun watching them get shut down by an upper belt thats 100 lbs lighter. :D

Years ago (many decades) there used to be Thia boxing videos on TV.
I remember the announcer telling that in the early days the boxers had their forearms wrapped with thin rope and broken glass glued to the rope.
That might hurt just a bit.

Our gym is like a big family. Always willing to help and give advice or tell stories about how one guy was giving a round kick and his opponent blocked it and the kicker's leg wrapped around the opponent's leg. Evidently they have some pretty good pain meds at the ring. I don't think there is a single person there with an attitude.

Part of the reason we do it is for may daughter's self confidence and they are very good about making her feel like she fits in with the veterans. She was even called badd-ass by our coach when she refused to use pads receiving this kick because they were too awkward. She was playing the part of the red corner.

MMA and MT have far more KO by kicks than kick boxing of the old days.

Rodsrsr 04-21-2017 02:47 PM

^^^^ Thats true! The old kicks seemed fast, high, but not that much power. Maybe they were designed more for scoring points? The MT and MMA kicks will take your head off!:eek::eek:
