For Lubey: GL-5 in a GL-4 Transmission?
There are so many opinions on the internet, not sure who is correct. Some people claim GL-5 damages 'yellow metal', i.e. synchros. Some people say it makes no difference, GL-5 can go in a GL-4 gearbox with no issues.
so, is it okay to 'upgrade' and old manual transmission and use GL-5 when GL-4 is called out in the service manual? I'm pretty sure I have a GL-5 in my '89 911 and I suspect GL-5 did not exist in 1989, but this question for an older VW Jetta.

GL 5 is not an upgrade, it is for differentials. GL4 in the transmission/transaxle

I have read that, so why is Swepco 201 often the recommended oil for a 915 and a G50?
Swepco 201 is GL-5.

Actually Swepco 201 is not recommended for a G50.
For an older VW I'd use the genuine VW gearbox oil from a dealer. I know that may seem redundant but after years of experience It's the one oil I've found to works with no issues.
