I remember hearing those music as a boy. When I was old enough to enjoy music, it was the early to mid 80s rock and roll music. Oh yeah, disco sucks was all I heard growing up from the older kids, so I hated it too. I do like to listen to hippie music but I find myself looking for some of those music (top 40) I heard as a child but don't know who the artist were or the title of songs. Thanks goodness for Utube and their suggestions or similar music so I click away and discovered Bread, England Dan adn John Ford Coley, Seals and Croft and a bunch of others that brings me back to that moment of my childhood. I can feel those long hot summers, hanging around at the large park at the end of our street. Oh yeah, man card. Take it, just take it and hang me by my balls

Oh I'm just teasing. I was a generation too young to have heard the classic 60s bands but I was just old enough to be aware of them while I heard my sisters play The Carpenters, The Bee Gees, etc. I hated my sisters' music because that was what was popular. I'd skip around the dial looking for the odd Who or Doors song that was too subversive to play in regular rotation. Eventually I started following 80s New Wave and punk because kids I thought were cool liked it. I hated 80s top 40 too. Now when I listen to music it's pretty much classics from the 60s. I didn't really mean to put down the music from just before my generation or the people who still get a kick out of it. I still hit the station button if Journey or REO Speedwagon comes on but there are plenty of guilty pleasure 80s songs I listen to when no one else is around. It's hard to compare the worst top 40 schmaltz from one era to the next. They're really the same. The only difference is you have an affection for what you grew up with. Seriously though, 80s rock rules! ;)

Every decade had great music, and stuff that makes me wanna puke...I'm gonna say no more :)

Three of those songs come up in my set list. Africa, Right Down the Line and Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover. You could add Lionel Ritchie 's Hello and a whole lot more. Boomers love the stuff and so do an amazing number of younger folks. Best Les |
Little Wing is the one song on that list that I have on my play list.

I'm telling you Boyz, watch it.
I can't find any videos, btw. I was no BeeGees fan but the play list sung by some really talented artists is f'ing great. Medley: "Stayin' Alive," "Tragedy" "How Deep Is Your Love," "Night Fever" -- Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly, Little Big Town, Andra Day "To Love Somebody" -- Keith Urban "Massachusetts" -- Ed Sheeran "Lonely Days" -- Panic! At The Disco "Tragedy" -- Tori Kelly "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" -- John Legend & Stevie Wonder "Islands in the Stream" -- Kelsea Ballerini & Thomas Rhett "Immortality" -- Celine Dion "Night Fever" -- DNCE "If I Can't Have You" -- Demi Lovato "More than a Woman" -- Jason Derulo & Tavares "How Deep Is Your Love" -- Little Big Town "Love So Right" -- Andra Day "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" -- Nick Jonas "Too Much Heaven" -- Pentatonix "Emotion" -- Katharine McPhee "Jive Talkin'" -- Barry Gibb "You Should Be Dancing" -- Barry Gibb "Stayin' Alive" -- Barry Gibb & Ensemble A bit of blasphemy: I really wasn't a Grateful Dead fan until I heard the album "Dedicated". The Grammy show reminds me of that. If my man card was in my wallet my pants would be on fire! |
I'm somewhat befuddled about the man card comments. Let's say that 80s rock music is manly for a second. The dude who made that music looked like chicks, with their big hair and mascara. And 70s disco was no better or worse. That leaves the 70s stoners and hippies. They look like they would break a body part if they had to really go outside and work.
BTW, I grew up with 80s music. Love Def Lepperd, Scorps, Ronnie James Dio, etc etc. But being manly has nothing to do with driving a Dodge Durango and trying to impress the kiddies at the local high school. You move on, dude. You become a grownup and discover different stuff eventually. I didn't even know about Little Big Town until I was watching the CMAs because my friend had it on TV in the motorhome at our pumpkin patch. Now I'm a huge fan of theirs. Here they are singing the Taylor Swift song. Truth be told, Taylor probably does it with more emotion. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/T-V0gkHFxGM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Under My Thumb
Stray Cat Blues Back Door Man Out of the Blue (Into the Fire)" |
Not a big dead guy but 'fire on the mountain' is a great tune.

I think the OP is talking about girly love songs of the 70s. Suddenly we started naming bands what most of us would listen to from the old days with man card showing proudly. The point is , no one in their right mind would tell you they listen to YOu Light Up My Life and find that enjoyable.
BTW, I am sick of that song and heard it several times daily back in grade school |
^ Got it. I agree then. Add every song by Barry Manilow, Richard Marx, and Michael Bolton to that list. And throw in Nickleback for good measure.

Agree but exception for copa cabana.

Tab's list gives me a Psychotic Reaction no matter how many times I Count Five to calm down. Paint it Black. Sympathy for, well you know . . . Who - Pinball Wizard, Talking about My Generation.
The Copa Cabana is a classic. I can listen to that one over and over again. Her name was Lola/She was a showgirl/with feathers in her hair . . . why do I still know all the lyrics to that song? |
The Bee Gees were making great music long before Saturday night fever came along.
PS I really like the Carpenter's music too. So there. :p |
Rusnak's post above was spot on..
80's Glam rocks was a weird time for me. i loved it. now? i still listen to it and impress myself by know the lyrics. what has staying power for me are bands like Fleetwood Mac. which is what i love about little big town. it's the harmony. which is why T Swift gave the song to them..they nail that thing where they blend voices awesome. |
i still refuse to google the Manferd Mann lyrics where it sounds like he is singing the word "Douche in the middle of the night" or something to that order. hahahah..
