Quick update! The best way I can describe it. Great car and yes it's big and that never goes away but it just does everything you ask of it. What really surprised me is that the turning circle is tighter than my Golf. It really is easy to live with.

There was a lot of dirt in the pile but it cleaned up well.

I recovered the drivers seat and fed the leather. Happy for now but I may redye all of the leather in the car because of cracks.

A friend in melb. had one for many years. He loved it, but more or less gave it away last year . It didnt age well for him as it had endless vacuum problems, worst was that heater wouldnt turn off.

I guarantee this appliance is going to be at the top of your toolbox!!! This will test all of your teutonic DNA. ;) Good luck with it.

So after nearly 4 years of new car reliability I now have to rebuild this wiring loom (it's NLA from Mercedes. :rolleyes:).

It's the lower one that goes from the battery terminal in the floor of the car to the starter motor and alternator. The smaller wires are for the oil level idiot light, oil pressure gauge and alternator. All of them have cracked and powdery insulation so the gauges and lights aren't working properly. The fatter cables are OK so I only have to replace the four smaller wires. The car was running fine but I wont drive a car with a flaky oil pressure gauge.

Note this is a different part number to your LHD cars because the starter motor on the RHD cars is on the left side of the motor (As you're looking forward sitting inside the car).

Now that it's out of the car it looks fairly simple but it was an absolute "basterd" to remove. I've heard from other owners that cars have gone to the crusher because this wiring loom became faulty. It was a lot of work to remove but I've never understood that kind of thinking. (I replaced the top main engine wiring loom soon after I bought the car)

But I get why they no longer manufacture these for the RHD cars... It would be very expensive to have a bunch of these sitting in a warehouse somewhere that may never be ordered. The whole biodegradable wire thing was mismanaged from the start. I talked to a salesman at the local dealership. He used to be a dealership mechanic and he changed many of these under warranty more than 20 years ago. Apparently they had no end of issues with disgruntled customers.

Anyways, it could be a whole lot worse.
- Once this is done it would have cost me less than $400 to fix/replace both top and bottom engine wiring looms.

There's not a company out there that custom makes them?

Its not the making the harness part that's difficult, its the in/out of the car. The upper harness is the opposite.
Delphi made harnesses for these cars, but no longer does, as most have been replaced. Its not an issue for post 96 cars, although some oddball harnesses are still subject (ie the adaptive damping harness on the v12's, as so few were made that the earlier harness lasted longer in production stock).

My upper is a Delphi (Manufactured in 2001)... I managed to find it locally for $300 (second hand). It took me about 45 minutes total to swap out. The original was OK but you could see that a lot of the insulation was missing.

Maybe but I have the tools to rebuild my own.

Just imagine what it would cost someone who can't work on their own car. :( :eek: $$$$

When I pulled the ads harness from my 96 r129, it was more or less bare wires from end to end, amazing that it sort of worked...
