But, to each his own.

Rear wheel bearing is at least 12 hours. :)

In my case it was 12+ months :). Yep, many moons ago I discovered a site when casually contemplating a 928. Soon, I got the bug and began searching for a 911....something I could learn about and work on....that site was for the birds btw....bought a 46k mile garage queen, and dove in....suspension refresh/upgrade, powder coating and recading stuff, Turbo brake$, the list goes on....these DIY sites will save you money doncha know :). That's my story and I'm stickin' too it....

I understand, and if I was looking for a project I would be after this one. But I have an '88 that has had its engine out for 18 months and I can't seem to find time to finish it. The last thing I need is another project sitting on the shelf to wait while I get the '88 finished.

Truth is, I'm in the same boat as you. I've got too many things going on to work on the cars. I'm building an Arco, a Starbucks, and an apartment complex and funeral home in the works. I drive the Caymen only when business calls me out of town, and only then because it's so much quicker than driving the truck.

Shaun @ Tru6 05-10-2017 03:33 AM

How profitable are Starbucks these days? The one I got to on Sunday mornings and now and again in the afternoon is always packed. But each sale is $5 or less on average I would think. how does the math work out?

Case closed.
$22k for a 190k mile car that needs work isn't very compelling.

You may re-think that statement if you look at the latest market update in the June issue of Excellence.

Excellence is always about 50% full of crap. Look at what actual cars are SELLING for, not listing prices. There are some pretty darn decent air cooled 911s that have sold recently on BaT for about $30k. Cabs in particular are really struggling to bring good money, except for really exceptional cars. That's on BaT, which typically brings pretty good money. I think the really exceptional cars are going to stay in the stratosphere, but the drivers are starting to return to reality. Not that we're ever going to see a $10k air cooled 911 again, but this isn't a $50k car either.

Well said. $26k gets you a very nice 964 cab with 135k miles.
1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet | Bring a Trailer

The plot thickens. I told my friend that it's a nice car and Mrs WD loved it, but it needed work and we don't need another project. He called back a few hours later and asked what it needed and said he would call the dealer and get an estimate and either adjust the price or have them fix it.
The list I gave him:

bearing noise/growling from the rear
engine running on 5 cylinders
rubber suspension bushings
fan belt
rust in door sill

911 Rod 05-15-2017 05:29 AM

Sounds like a $10,000 car if you do the math.

wdfifteen 05-15-2017 05:40 AM

I have no idea what a dealer would charge for all that.

If it's a Porsche dealer, 20 grand for the engine and 20 grand for the rest

Chances are you'd have to sell your Speedster to cover most of it.

Ha! I bought my '88 coupe with 80k on the clock and a book full of service records. The previous owner was a checkbook owner and spent a fortune on it. Oil change with synthetic oil every 3000 miles (!). I drove it like I stole it, and by 90k it was burning a quart of oil every 700 miles through the valve guides. "These cars is like a box of chocolates."

hmmmm, everyone I know that has run synthetic in a 3.2 has had Yuuuuge problems. PO used it in mine... valve job at 60k. Ymmv-

I ran Mobil 1 for 10 years with no problems.

wdfifteen 05-16-2017 02:27 PM

My '88 leaked a small amount of oil until I changed back to dino oil. The oil leak stopped.

svandamme 05-17-2017 06:54 AM

dino oil creates sludge in the engine, sludge plugs up minder gasket leaks.
Question is : is sludge in the engine better then a minor leak?

911 Rod 05-17-2017 06:57 AM

If your engine isn't leaking oil is there oil in your engine?

It can, but that doesn't mean it does. If you drive it like you stole it, do so regularly and do regular oil changes, there shouldn't be any sludge problems. But then I always changed my oil after a spirited drive, while it was still scalding hot, and I never let it go past the recommended interval. My oil always looked new coming out.
