Let's Play "Stump the Baz!"

Here's one for you Baz. What the heck happened here?

One of my avocado trees produced a bunch of misfits. Here's a couple pictures. Reminds me of Tommy Lee Jones' Two Face character.

Sorry, Craig. I'm not a fruit crop expert. My discipline is in ornamentals.

Someone from the California state extension service could probably help or another avo grower (you have coops there, right?) or maybe you could find the info online through a Google search.

As an aside, I bought some that looked like those a week ago and they were just fine, aside from being a little on the small side....

PS: you win...you stumped the Baz!

Got the answer already! About 10 years ago my groundskeeper grafted Haas onto all the Bacon variety trunks. Apparently, some of the genetic material made it's way up the Haas graft.

BTW Baz...If you PM your address before tomorrow morning, I'll FedEx Ground a nice box of the good Haas ones to you. It's no trouble. I have about ten boxes going east tomorrow.

That sounds about right on the genetic variation, Craig.

Very generous of you to offer the avos....I have your email and will send my addy right away.

Next time you are in town, I will wine and dine you.

hahhaha..

man..i remember an hispanic bully kid in grade school who couldnt pronounce "oriental". he would just blurt out "ornamental" when he was trying to dig at me. i cant say or read the word without thinking about him.

he was a huge kid and i would have jabbed back, but the ass-kicking (of my ass) would have been so not worth it.

Hey Scott.....looks like Craig's groundskeeper paid you a visit!l!

Seriously - looks like some kind of deformity took place maybe as a result of an aberration when it was a seedling...that's just a guess.

Great thread...ornaments.....lol.....

OK Baz, this just came up under an olive tree. I've never seen it before and it was not planted by me. I know it's some kind of a bulb flower, but it's obviously been dormant for a decade as I've never seen it before. The heavy rainfall must have brought it up.

If you have a fruiting olive tree, you are a lucky man.
I've heard their sweet spot is about 20-50 years and only under the right conditions.

It's a "Bearded Iris", Craig. Beautiful! Very ORCHID-like!

The foliage is a dead give-away that it's an Iris, too, in addition to the bloom.

Not sure which variety it is....there's so many of them!

Thanks again for the Avos....they were delicious!!! I'm down to the last 3 now.

Our property was part of a large olive grove subdivided in the 60's. We have three olive trees that were left from the original orchard by the first buyer of the parcel, who didn't build here until 1974. They produce so many d@mned olives that we used to spray two of them to prevent fruiting.

This one is over 100 years old and is loaded with blossoms this year. Some are already showing baby olives.

I knew you'd know it Baz! "Bearded Iris", I like that. Is it normal for a bulb to stay dormant so long? I may hand water the area next spring to help it back up.

The avo's are my pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed them. I'll send more next year too. I put you on "the list"
