Alexa is always listening. Creeps me out.

Even when I don't address her, she responds. I'm thinking of disconnecting her but my kid loves asking her questions. I don't Google much anymore.

Siri too. No thanks.

Why would I pay a company to provide them so much intimate information?

Hugh R 05-21-2017 07:19 PM

When NBC says "alexa" in a new article it/she wakes up.

More than Alexa is listening to you:

If she sounded like "Friday" then I'd use the app.

I honestly don't get the appeal. Who wants a machine listening to them all day? And for what...to save the effort of picking up a phone and googling something?

Mine has never responded without a person or tv saying her name.(or close to it)
As far as listening in all the time...doesn't it just listen for the wake-up word first..and then connect to wi-fi? I don't think it's listening in when it hasn't been addressed.
I really don't care if mine is listening in just then or all the time. I can't imagine a person sitting somewhere else being interested in what is said. All they would hear from my place, would be a lot of cussing, as I am trying to rehab this leg!:)

sammyg2 05-22-2017 05:53 AM

It's a shame these things don't come with an "off" switch. ;)

From the Amazon site..
When you want to use Echo, simply say the wake word, “Alexa,” and Echo lights up and streams audio to the cloud, where the Alexa Voice Service is leveraged to recognize and respond to your request instantly

Gogar 05-22-2017 06:41 AM

Oh ok they said it's not listening. Just listening.

Gogar 05-22-2017 06:45 AM

I just got done setting up a bunch a webcams in my house too. You know, for MY security.

Alexa, go ahead and hand over recordings in murder case - CNN.com

Tobra 05-22-2017 08:27 AM

Wow, and I thought I was maybe being a little paranoid turning my phone off when I am driving.

So if they are actually out to get you, it means you are not really paranoid, right?

craigster59 05-22-2017 08:49 AM

Heck, they even used a murdered woman's Fitbit to charge her husband for murder...
