Graduation Gift for Son - a 1911, wondering if

Anyone in the Pelican community have a nice 1911 they would sell? He loves those 45s and he has worked his butt off in school, shooting, and scouts so I think its only fitting.

PM or call me if you have any ideas and a 1911 you think would make for a great gift for a great young man.

Not sure how much $ your looking to spend dad, but I can tell you that the Kimber Custom TLE II is one of the most accurate pistols I have ever shot. Fantastic weapon.

If you want the traditional look, hunt for an old Detonics "Combat Master"...

Have a Rock Island 1911, I think it might have been made in Nevada. Not for sale, though. They're high quality, and acurate guns. Not sure what a good uesd one sell for but, a new one can't be much more expensive. I'm not really, a hand gun guy but, you point and shoot and hit the targets. I can't hit the broad side of a barn with other most other guns. I don't shoot it much, just some thing stashed away that will hold it's value.

Anyway, your son will enjoy it.

I think my Rock Island was about $300 less than the Kimber American. The Kimber American is an awesome gun, though.

I got my son a Springfield Mil-Spec when he finished boot camp. It is a great gun and has been trouble free.

Both the Remington's and Rugers are very good guns for less money.

I think that the Kimbers are overpriced for what you get. They are fancy and available with a lot of features but seem to have a lot of quality/function issues. If I wanted more features I would get one of the higher end Springfields (the Range Officer is a great deal) or a S&W or Sig - but they seem to be more than you want to spend.

Rock Island are made in the Philippines. They are mostly solid, functional guns - but they are the bottom of the 1911 market.

Bad magazines can make almost any 1911 look bad - Wilson's are always good.

As far as a used gun - I don't think that you will save a lot on the above guns. If your local stores are to expensive, find out what they charge for a transfer and consider Grab-a gun, Buds, PSA or one of the other online distributors. My local shop stocks very few guns now, she does almost exclusively transfers.

If I were getting a 1911 now (moved from 45 to 9mm, so I have a CZ75 now instead) I'd get another Rock Island, probably the "tactical" model over the GI. I'd also get their 22 conversion kit with it, since it is AFAIK the only all steel 22 conversion for the 1911.

Would also be pretty tempted with the 9mm/22TCM conversion kit... buddy has one, the 22TCM is a neat round.

Colt's are kind of expensive, even when you find a nice used one.

It sounds like M.D. is trying to save a couple of bucks.

Since it's a gift I figured one of the better quality domestic guns would be a good choice. 1911's are notoriously sensitive to proper fitting, a 1911 that isn't quite right is very frustrating.

Personally, if I am spending Colt money I would get a Dan Wesson. But that's me.

I thought I liked .45 1911's until I picked up a 9mm 1911.

My Colt Competition 9mm 1911 is a fantastic gun.

Found it new on Gunbroker for $ 705.00.

I don't necessarily disagree that there may be better guns available for similar money, though I thought Wesson were above the ~$800 point of entry for a new colt.

For a gift that could turn into an heirloom in a 100 years or whenever I think an actual colt is a great choice. They are fine guns and have the heritage. Kinda like giving a rolex for a graduation present, even if you may like omega better

If a colt is out budget though, completely understandable

I can't say I have any experience with 9mm 1911's. I don't actually own any 9mm's.

That is a great price for a great gun. If M.D. can get a Colt Competition for $700. that's hard to beat.

What price range are you considering? If you're looking for a "special gift", I have a mint condition Colt Gold Cup Match Target that I would consider selling or trading for big bore revolver.

If you are asking $256 for that and M.D. doesn't want it - I will take it.

Mike,

Think about the new modular Sig the Army selected: the Sig Sauer's P320 pistol.

It is going to be my next hand gun. I own a few Colts (including my Father's Commander he used in Korea and Vietnam and a .38 Colt Army Officer Revolver that was my Grandfathers) a Belgium Browning Hi-Power, a MKII, a Kimber, etc. so I get the allure of old guard pistols.

I shot one this weekend, one hundred rounds and it was great.

The New SIG P320: Striker-Fired, Modular Duty Pistol

As nice as the P320 is, all the young guys seem to want a 1911 in .45. That's just going by my son and 3 of his friends.
