Yet another smart watch thread

So... the fibit thread sent me down this rabbit hole... wife has fitbit Alta and loves it, tracks her steps during the day and sleep at night... my med insurance gave me a free fibit but it is the little thing that clips to your belt. Fun little gadget but I forget to clip it on and I don't sleep with a belt so not getting a lot of useful data.

I will cut to the chase,
Samsung S3
Heart rate, fitness tracker, all that cool stuff.
I'm a watch geek so I love the multiple watch faces (to match my multiple personalities :D) but seriously you have analog/digital plus easy to read sports face and classic old school face all in one watch.
Plus links to you phone to check & answer texts etc.
GADGET BOY WANT!
But wait... CNET reviews "GPS is unreliable" and apparently it uses GPS for the fitness function.
But wait, there is more! CNET says "there is a new batch of smart phones coming out so you may want to wait."
This is very much an unnecessary purchase so sure... so as a matter of fact I can wait.

I know some of you are out on the edge of tech so anyone know what the next gen of smart watches will bring?

As an aside anyone have a S3 and how do you like it?

As a further aside years ago I sold my soul to Google so there is no turning back for me therefore don't try to sell me a iWatch... nothing wrong with them but not switching horses at this late date.

TIA

There was just an article in the paper saying most of the fitness watch like devices are very inaccurate especially on calories used causing many users to think "wow, I burned so many calories today that I can have another slice of pie!" When actually they had too much to eat already and now are setting their goals farther back.

Lesson here is to just spend the money on pie.

Have yet to justify a smart watch. Plus really enjoy my 928 watch.

I'm an Apple Watch user but if not, I'd look at Garmin. They've been in this biz longer than anyone.

That is the one! (S3 just being the next gen) how does the GPS work for you?

Very cool indeed... but at $3K a little out of my range.

Since it is normally connected to my phone, I keep the GPS off, along with the WiFi and the 3G connection. When I don't have my phone, you can switch on both GPS and WiFi for location tracking. Works quite well. Google maps Wifi signals along with the street mapping.

Amazon has "refurbished" Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic for $119. These are T-Mobile locked, but work fine as Bluetooth operation. We're with T-mobile, and they charge on $5/mth for 3G coverage. I think the Gear S3 is 4G.

We are on T-mobile too... but do you need the $5/mth for 3G if it is synced to your phone via Bluetooth? I guess the GPS would need the 3G?

Also trying to figure the difference in the S2 and S3 (they look identical)

Need? Not really, but it is cool to turn your phone off and he able to make a call with just the watch.

You can make calls with the S2? I thought that was only available with the S3?

Frankly I'm more interested in using it as a fitness tracker and reading up on it seems that it uses GPS to do the tracking and I wonder if I need G3 to have GPS?

That and it looks like a regular watch and not a 'fitness tracker'... begin able to check texts/email etc. with my phone in my pocket would be a plus...

It depends on the watch. Some are Bluetooth/WiFi only, some are 3G.

I have owned the Original Gear S and the Gear S2. In both cases the watch had the 3G/phone capability
