My neighbor's new obnoxious and annoying flood light.....

It was installed a couple weeks ago.

I waited for the right opportunity to mention to the husband that their new flood light was blinding me and thus very annoying and asked if he could try to adjust it so it doesn't blind me. The wife is prone to emotional hysteria so wanted to talk to only the husband.

They are both smokers and drinkers so we're not dealing with the most practical of human beings.

Just took these photos a few minutes ago. Doesn't look like anything has changed since our conversation a few days ago.

I will wait 1 more week and then make my move (think concentration camp lights mounted on my garage corners).

For the record, I have had 2 twin floodlights on my garage corners since buying my place 20 years ago, but they currently aim sideways - not towards them. I pointed this out to my neighbor but - whatever - ball is in his court for 7 more days....

If a neighbor asked this of me, I would have resolved the problem in less than 15 minutes.....smh....

Invite them over for a drink, then arrange seating so your back is to their light, they have to face it.....

Hand them sunglasses, and put this on endless loop:

I feel for you... older lady behind our house, specifically right behind where our master bedroom is, paranoid, leaves lights on inside and out 24/7.

I tried making contact and being friendly... she actually has a note on her front door saying something along the lines of leave me alone or I'll call the cops.

A couple summers ago it was hot, as usual, we sleep with high windows/blinds above our bed open. I decided, heck with it... at like 3am I grabbed a welding glove from the shop, hopped the wall separating our properties and unscrewed the 2 flood lights just enough that they went out!

Problem solved!! Took her a year and a half to realize they were out and call a handyman!

This past month she got moved to a home by her son.

Hoping the new neighbors don't leave the lights on all the time.

Best of luck with your situation.

Thanks for the suggestion but:

1. I don't want to have a drink with them - especially in my driveway

2. I know I didn't mention this in the OP but I encouraged my neighbor to come over and stand in my driveway as part of the re-adjustment process to help evaluate the issue as he goes along

If anything, I could drop copies of these photos in his mailbox with a carefully worded note politely asking for some relief....(with cc to file, of course)

Unconscious neighbors...Ugh!!! What drudgery they are.
Mine are young and selfish. Oh, and defensive.

Check with local zoning. Might be an ordinance against light/light pollution/adjoining property.

It starts with a light and ends with toilet seats in the trees.

Friend of mine lived a couple of doors down from this mess.

Thanks for the replies and humor thus far.....guess this was more of a rant than asking for input, although input is always welcome and might actually be helpful.

I also realize some of you have stories of your own to share (such as Cooper's in post #3)...which is cool.

I really don't want to rat them out to the local authorities. I've never done that to anyone in my entire life and don't want to start now. I've always believed that to be bad karma, as well as what people do when they are too cowardly or weak-minded to handle things on their own.

I also do not want to start a feud or promote hard feelings.

The concept I have about shining my lights in their direction is how I will probably proceed - and hopefully they will see for themselves how annoying it is, and do the right thing by me.

The electrician who installed the lights is a friend of mine and I will call him tomorrow and find out how many lumens those lights are. He might also catch some grief for installing them without regard to how they impact the neighbors (me). He knows I live here...just oblivious....

High output lasers are pretty cheap...

What is the difference between the two? A simple matter of focus... ...your move.

I agree with "dad911" about checking out the local regs. If the light is against local regs, I'd let them know and since they are being insensitive, you will inform the correct people. What do you care, you're not going to be friends with them anyway. I'd also suggest they put in a motion sensor controlled light and tell them it is more affective at discouraging potential intruders as well as being cheaper to run, since it only goes on when triggered.
P.S. I have motion sensor lights on the sides of my house pretty much all around. They are really great for lighting the way if I walk outside after dark.

This. I had some low lifes renting house behind me. Nuisance barking dogs for months at all hours, they wouldn't stop no matter how many times cops called. They put up spotlights that shined into my bedroom window. High velocity pellet solved the problem

That's not a light.

Here's how I deal with the neighbor's obnoxious light.

And by the way, I have two.

This was wise and fair from a parity standpoint.

I do hope it sinks in. Maybe on Wednesday?

That's disgusting.

I suggest a 22 LR sub-sonic round instead. So quiet they won't even self eject.

I had the same problem several years ago. Guy across the Bayou had his light shine right at my back door. I went over and talked to him, problem solved.

You need to read this email exchange:

"I cant help it if some of the light goes across the road. Put something up in your window."

Just give hime a nice "Thanks man" and he'll probably take it down in a week.

Feel your pain. We have an older European neighbor whose 40-something son still lives with her.

Contrary to local ordinance, she rents a room in her house as well. One lodger decided he needed to park in front of my house since I had shade trees. I tried to reason with homeowner and appeal to her good graces. Found out quickly that she had none.

So when the son decided to park his 18-wheel tractor sans trailer in the street for about 4 days straight, I looked up the zoning laws again. One quick call to the popo and son had a $400 ticket.
