Anybody know about this car?

Is it really worth the money?

Stored 1993 Porsche driven six miles worth millions | Fox News

It’s one of the fastest and most unique cars ever made, and it hasn’t been driven in 25 years.

In fact, it’s only been driven six miles…ever.

rsr
(RM Sotheby's)
In 1993 someone with very particular tastes ordered a sliver Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.8 race car -- one of just 51 built – with a fully trimmed interior done up in an impossibly bright Can Can Red leather, carpeting, and dash and door upholstery, with just a few grey accents to offer retinas some relief.

Only two were built with a street car-style cabin, but the other didn’t feature this color combination, not to mention its purple Speedline wheels and gold brake calipers.

MORE CLASSIC CAR NEWS FROM FOX NEWS AUTOS

rsr
(RM Sotheby's)
The colorful coupe is equipped with the same race spec 375 hp 3.8-liter flat-six-cylinder engine and five-speed transmission as the rest of the cars, a few of which have won races at Le Mans, Daytona and other tracks over the years.

Inexplicably, this one never had the chance to do the same, or even stretch its legs. Shortly after it was delivered, it disappeared into a collection, and still wears the coat of Cosmoline rust inhibitor applied at the factory.

You now have the chance to right that wrong, because it’s being auctioned at the RM Sotheby’s Villa Erba event in Italy on May 27th, where it’s expected to sell for well over $2 million.

That car appeared on my Facebook feed a few days ago and fascinated to know more. Amazing.

I wonder why they choose not to wash the ****ing thing. I guess that is supposed to impress the bidders but it certainly does not impress me. They market something as a new car, and it looks like ****...

It's being talked about all over the place!

I think it's sad that it never served its purpose, but I think it's incredible, nonetheless! Flame suit "on": yeah that interior is totally over the top, and amethyst wheel centers over gold calipers is kookoo, but I find that it somehow adds to the unicorn mystique of this particular car...I like it. Would I have ordered it this way? No.

If I had it, I'd get it running properly and drive it the way it is! Sadly it will likely continue to languish in a collection, as every additional kilometer will ruin the "investment".

I would love to know what the original factory workers were thinking as this particular build made its way to the end of the line...

Wow! At least wash and detail it! With only 10 miles that's not a patina car by any stretch. It will sell for stupid money for sure.

Edit: I see it still has the factory cosmoline on it, so I see why no detailing....

Yeah, I get that. It's also good at attracting dust and grit, which isn't a good thing.

The Cosmoline was normally removed long before the first buyer ever laid eyes on the car. I understand the reason they left it, so they could show that it literally has never been used. The miles that were put on it were likely put on it by the factory when they tested the car after assembly.

That doesn't mean I agree with it. If you buy the car and choose not to use it but to display it, I would assume you would want to remove the Cosmolene. If you don't, then there's really no point to buying the car. You don't use it, it's not attractive to look at, it's just an investment. There are more attractive investments available.

People do some foolish things with cars, but that's probably never going to change.

The Cosmoline coating gives some clues. I'd guess this was bought by a dealer but never delivered to the customer. For whatever reason it just sat in the workshop.
Maybe the customer paid a hefty deposit but never collected the car?

I don't understand why they are marketing is all dirty like that.
This is not a barn find, but a time capsule with zero miles
It should be marketed as a brand new car, not a filthy pig.

Read up, that's the factory delivery coating with dust attached. It's a protectant.

agreed, pretty garish, and I'm not a fan of the gray gauge faces.

More than 30 years ago I worked in a car factory. One of the jobs I did was to wash off a coating that was applied to small vans that had been imported from Japan.
It may have been the same Cosmoline coating but I don't know for sure. It's like a spray on wax.
We used a solvent to remove the stuff. From memory the solvent was very mild but you had to wear gloves to use it.
You just slopped the solvent on with a rag and the coating immediately washed away.

I can see why it's been left on this particular car but there's nothing special about it.

P.T. Barnum was right. But the auction results speak for themselves. The how much is it worth question was answered.
