Like a drywall screw through a copper pipe...
Yup, this just 'happened' here, its a holiday and now I have no water at all..
The pipe has this "screw hole sized leak" so I shut off the main... it's very close to the main of course, so no water anywhere. Murphy's Law is in full effect, it's a holiday.. a National Holliday. Two questions.. I know how to sweat copper but this is of course in a really tight spot an "s"curve with a junction over other pipes, really close....To fix I will have to cut perfectly good pipe and the one with the hole.. to patch I have to buy some elbows and straight pipe...basically the last thing I want to do today and I don't think I have everything I need. Is there a quick fix that works? Most products look like total gimmicks and stores are closed right now. My mechanical side was thinking to tap out the hole so its threaded then put a screw in there or maybe a self tapping screw w/ a dab of epoxy or teflon tape.... ah! I am SO screwed! ( Happy Holliday to all who served and their families ! Seriously. ![]()

Piece of inner tube or similar and a hose clamp.

Go to the hardware store and get some sharkbites if you don't know how to sweat a coupler in.
Sorry I should have finished reading the rest of the post. But you could use the sharkbites and some flex tube to get by.

Sharkbite. Or sweat in a coupler at the leak.
Coupler won't raise a red flag with a home inspector when you sell.

Home Depot is open to get the things you will need. As stated either a sharkbite or just sweat in all new pipe.

I have used this in the past as a temporary repair, but really could be permanent. It is water activated and sets in about thirty minuets. Available at HD or Lowes. Could also use a sharkbite or pex. I would go with pex myself but then I have the tools.

Copper pipe in my garage sprung 4 pinhole leaks. Didn't notice it until the sheetrock started turning black from mold. Shark bites are the ticket. Sweating copper is tough if there is any water in the pipe. In my case I could not completely stop the trickle.

Stuff a piece of bread up the pipe to temporarily stop the water leaking out. Breaks down and flushes out after a short time.

Funny....I was completely out of bread and all my plumbing tools were left at my rental 90 miles away. Hack saw and shark bites saved the day.

The way the seal in a Sharkbite works, the more pressure it is exposed to, the better it will seal.
They are good indefinitely, and code compliant. FWIW, pictures are always a help. Good luck. FWIW, I think you can Sharkbite a section of PEX to copper, if that would help you. Cut the pipe somewhere easier, and let in the PEX. Do a search on this. Last edited by DanielDudley; 05-29-2017 at 02:43 PM.. |

Yes, but it is not just for heating. It is also for potable water. Most new homes are plumbed with pex. Cheaper than copper do not need to know how to seat a pipe because it is all mechanically fastened.

Sorry, to hear that sucks.
I had to buy 20' of PEX and a crimping tool and crimps for my RV, they'd left one PEX line without a crimp fitting when building it. Took an hour to take the water cabinet apart to spend 10 seconds putting on a crimp and another hour to put it back together. Out of warranty, of course.

I could be wrong but I believe that PEX is against code in NYC and from your location it appears you are in NY. If you want to fix it once and not ever have to change it down the road I would not use PEX

Rubber patch w/hose clamp is STILL holding.
Can't wait to inform my L.L. about this, its a rental. I will tell him in a few days. His "workers" took my bathroom sink out 14 months ago.. it's called renovation harassment, I think. Now I remember that I had to argue with them not to take my only toilet out that day. glad I convinced them... but that is a topic for another day! Thanks Guys, enjoy your week.

Same thing happened to me, but 30 years after I did the drywall. Took that long for the screw to rust enough to lose the seal. Just above where it came through the horizontal 2x4s at the floor. Bought one of those vibrating cutting tools and carved some clearance around the pipe and used a Sharkbite. Still holding. Which reminds me, I still need to patch the access hole in the drywall behind the washer. Out of sight, out of mind.

jt - I'm still not clear how the hole got there. If you (or someone) literally drilled/screwed a hole in it the the pipe it should be structurally sound and the hose clamp patch should last indefinitely.
