Interesting, but does it eliminate the ballistic plates that are designed to defeat 7.62? We never were in the field without those plates.

The article wasn't that specific, but it did say that it stopped 44 magnum.

They realized they had hit on something special, that could potentially lighten the average 26-pound body armor kit worn by servicemen in the field by as much as two thirds.

It could possibly be used to reduce or replace the thick metal plates that protect military aircraft, tanks and other vehicles.

But then they aren't going to give away all of their secrets.

Local range I can shoot 44 mag (even from a carbine) at the steel plates at 25 yards. 223 isn't allowed it will zip right through the plates. Even 22 TCM or 5.7x28 will zip through them. Big difference in the amount of energy each round generates *and* the area that energy is applied to on impact (223 will be ~1/2 the diameter at best right?)
