Went to the pistol range yesterday!

Finally. I bought my BIL a .22 pistol and parlayed that into one for myself. Both for Christmas. End of May and I finally get a chance to ditch work.

Reminder: I bought myself a Browning Buckmark Contour. Right off the bat, I had a hard time seeing the all-black gunsights. I need to remedy that at any cost. Despite this I was okay lining up the fuzzy and dark sights with the relatively clear target. Bone stock! What a shooter!!! Fifty cent piece groups right off the bat. @10 yards. I can't wait to see what improved sights will do for me. My best group was actually with my BIL's gun. The standard Buckmark. I'm gonna experiment w a touch of white paint on the front sight. Getting older eyes suck.

I love owning a .22. I should have bought it years ago.

Glad you're happy. I still enjoy my old (1971 purchase) Browning Challenger.

I really like my Ruger Security Six in 22LR or my favorite 22 Magnum when you want to send a message.

.22 pistols are so cool. The ammo is so cheap it's almost free. No recoil. VERY accurate. So much fun.

Used to be...

I bet the ammo prices for 22LR will improve in the next year or so.

11cents/round for low-end match ammo (SK Std+), as cheap as 6cents/round for plinking bulk stuff.

Only way you can reload to hit these prices is if you stocked up on primers etc 20 years ago. In which case, you should be sitting on a few cases of 22 ammo.

id10tI not sure I understand, are you saying you reload 22 ammo????????

Wonderful world of 22s................

The 22 rimfire is my all time favorite shooting round. I probably have as many or more 22s than all other calibers combined. I even found a Sig 22 conversion kit for my Sig220 pistol! Fortunately, I had a pretty good stash of rimfire ammo so I never had to pay the big prices that were being asked. Here is one of my favorites, a Model 1897 Marlin lever made in 1901 with deluxe wood, pistol grip stock and 3/4 length magazine.

I bought two Springfield 1911s this week. Hope to get to the range today.

The other way is to cast your own bullets. I can shoot any centerfire pistol or revolver caliber I own for five to ten cents per round.

That out of the way, yes, .22's are great. I have two revolvers (one single and one double action) and one pistol. Accurate, dirt cheap to shoot, and once you are shooting, you are done - no reloading, no cleaning (maybe every couple of years if you start to feel guilty), just good clean fun.

Beretta Neos is easier to field strip...

IF you have a (old) stock of primers, powder, etc. Primers locally are 4-5c each. Powder $20-30 per pound, depending on brand, type, and what store is selling it. There is no way for someone who hasn't been sitting on a stockpile for years to be able to reload for less than what 22 ammo can be bought for.

nice... Shooting range is my happy place.

Taz's Master 06-01-2017 07:43 AM

Absolutely try paint. White is a good start. Testors or bright nail polish if you want something orange or red. Old eyes are such a disappointment. A red dot sight would likely help more unlimited eye relief and no multi plane focus challenge.

Security or Single?

Always been envious of the spoon threads on here but this week my family and I visited a local shooting range (not UK local) and tried shooting for our first ever time.

We had a very thorough gun safety briefing first and then hit the range using a mix of 9mm Glock 17 hand guns and a Slovakian 9mm rifle (sorry can't remember the model).

Got to say I really enjoyed myself, more so the with the Glock as it was quite bit harder being accurate with it than the rifle. The kids really enjoyed themselves too.

Also I shot a couple of rounds with a 50 cal Desert Eagle, what a OTT hand cannon that was to use, great fun!

I'll never be in a position to own any spoons but I totally get it and can see it being a new hobby I can enjoy for a long time.

I have an older Ruger Single Six and a Ruger MKII with a bull barrel.

They have been an introductory pistol to a number of first time shooters and, without fail, set the hook.

Are air rifles/pistols "out" for you too? A Diana has been making me smile a lot lately....thanks Higgy :)! I don't think 22lr prices will ever go back to before....they've boiled us like frogs :(. I finally broke down and restocked on CCI mini- mags at 8 cents per round after watching Gander Mtn obviously manipulate their generous supply a year or so back. There isn't a shortage....they just like their profit margins and they are all in it together imo....YMMV.

Jeff Higgins 06-01-2017 04:12 PM

Yup, nothing like plinking with a good .22. Here are my current examples:

Top is a pre-Model 17 S&W just recently purchased from the local Cabella's used gun inventory. Grips are off of my Model 19 that now wears Herrett "Roper" stocks.

Next is a Ruger Single Six purchased new in 1981 as a 21st birthday present to myself, wearing Eagle Grips stocks in Pau Ferro.

Last, but not least, is an early '50's issue High Standard Sport King, the most accurate of the bunch.
