Buckshot....brand and where to buy?
Been lookng for an older pump shotgun, and found one over the weekend, an older Remington 870 (can't decipher the barrel codes yet, will call R with help on the serial # later). Had to drive to the mountains to purchase....should have taken the 911 instead
. So I went online looking for low/managed recoil 00 buckshot (I won't be shooting further than say 20 yds), at big azz snapping turtles and also for self defense if necessary. My uncle tells me that full power 00 is NOT fun in a short barrel/light spoon, and from what I read, the low recoil loads pattern better and are a better option. So I was on Cheaper Than Dirt, and had three boxes, 1 Fiacchi and two flavors of Remington ready to purchase....damn shipping charge was more than the shells . I buy a lot of stuff from Midway, but their selection is limited.....What buckshot do you shotspooners use, and where is a good online source that's reasonable? Thanks!!! |

Low recoil buckshot
If you haven't already done so, get some of the Fiocchi "short" 12 gauge shells. They have quite a bit less recoil and your shotgun's magazine will hold more of them making it a higher capacity weapon. Other than that, you will have to research ammo brands to find some that shoots a lighter weight charge and or at a lower velocity. Happy shooting!

Go to SG Ammo
They have good deals on bulk and usually free shipping too

Buckshot is going to make through those turtle shells? I am very skeptical. Soft slow moving lead, low angle of attack. Seems like prime conditions to glance off.

Or put a limbsaver recoil pad on the 870. They really do work.

Wish I'd known about SG Ammo a few days ago
. I've got a bulk of Fiocchi low recoil (1150 fps) on the way. The three 2' diameter snappers I've dispatched with my Marlin .357 each took four shots...no bueno. I'm shooting into my middle pond at a steep angle downward from about 15 yds away...no chance of me missing with all 9 00 pellets....I'll know in a few daze if they are effective....if not, I'll break out the M629 . The recoil pad on the 870 is pretty hardened....I hate to add a slip-on pad....but I've considered this....thanks all! Can't wait to play with it....
