Ford Edge won't go faster than 82 MPH

A Coworker has this car. A couple weeks ago he got it back after some minor bodywork (parking lot bump). He was following his son on the highway and it wouldn't go faster than 82. No lights, no warnings, it just wouldn't go any faster. He's familiar with the "mykey" feature and he is adamant that wasn't the problem.

The next day he was able to drive it as fast as he wanted. His son took it to Columbus with no restrictions, the problem hasn't reoccurred.

Here's the question - could this have been some kind of "break-in" limitation that was triggered by the battery being disconnected? If not, what?

Could be. I dunno.

(afaik)The OBD2 system will not pass smog in some states like Californai until all the drive cycles have been met.

Meaning with some vehicles it has to be driven 30mph for 5 minutes, then WOT on the freeway ramp, then 70mph for 15, then 5 mph for 25 minutes, with at least 80% load to test short/long fuel trim when EGR valve is opened then.....so...anyways you get the point.

The computer wants all possible real world driving being accomplished
But for the weekend-trips-to-the-store granny, this would never happen.

Or there was a bottle cap under the throttle.

Yup, battery died on my Mazda. It was due for annual. Yanked the battery out of the Benz and ran it up to the shop.

Guy tells me I need to drive 60 miles before they can smog it so the computer is calibrated.

The 'monitors' have to be reset to pass (some jurisdictions all a small number of fails). 'Not reset' is not the same as a CEL, so you can't easily tell if all the monitors have reset, you could have no CEL, but still fail the inspection. Sixty miles seems high, but you can check with a decent code reader. My Volvo would reset in about 30 miles of average highway driving, no WOT. I am not aware of any need to exceed a minimum speed.

I don't think the OBDII monitors caused that issue; disconnecting the battery may make some modules re-learn adaptations, but it should not limit the top end.

That's Nothing. I drive a 2002 Jetta that my son bought for $200.

I had struggled for months with a code for air/fuel ratio. I finally figured out that the vacuum line under the intake was cracked. Two weeks later, no codes, I took it in for inspection.

The guy calls me, two of the "readiness" flags aren't set. He tells me to drive it 40 miles and bring it back.

I drive it a couple days and hook up my scan tool. Still two readiness checks not set.

I drive the VW "readiness" regime 3 times (and it is no fun, even in the country). They are finally set. Passes emissions no problem.

But that can't be what is going on here.

Back in the 80's had a 78 full size Blazer. It had a 250 cuin in-line 6 cyl. It would not do over 80mph any time and no matter how long you drove it. And that was floored. It would however, pull a house over with torque.

A few years later got an 81 Blazer with 305 cuin V8. It wouldn't go over 70, and on hills you were lucky to do 50. It had a lift kit and 34 inch tires. Swapped out the 305 for a hot rod 400. It went much faster and got 7 mpg better gas mileage.

I had a new 2015 Edge for about 6 months. Didn't like it and traded it in. When you get the vehicle, one key is an admin key and the other is set up with the mykey restrictions on it. I suspect they were using the restricted key.

Porchdog 06-13-2017 05:04 AM

As stated in the original post - he is convinced that it wasn't the mykey feature.

He tried that and it gives both an audible alarm and a text warning - he had neither in this incident.

Happened on that one trip, hasn't happened since.

When I test drove a new Mustang GT it was limited to 80 mph or something like that. I really didn't believe the salesman, but sure enough hit 80 on the highway and that was it. He told me they were set that way from the factory till the did the PDI for sale.

Perhaps it was put into a similar mode?

In advance Valet Mode

Maybe if he tried driving it with his tinfoil hat on backwards. He is wearing a tinfoil hat while he drives for 5 days after getting back from the shop, right?

Porchdog 06-13-2017 05:27 PM

I believe that I have my answer.

According to a tech there are a few models of Fords with Mykey that do this after the battery is disconnected. Apparently there is a reset with the factory scan tool to prevent it.

The things you learn...

DanielDudley 06-14-2017 02:47 AM

So it was Mykey, just not his key...

Porchdog 06-14-2017 03:42 AM

I'm thinking that it's a Feature!
