Surprised at Amazon

Bought 6 things yesterday, 5 unique shipments, all on one card. This card I had just gotten a new version of, same number, different exp. date and placed the order too quickly before realizing I needed to change the date.

Of the 5, 1 declined instantly. I clicked on the link, went through the process, changed the date, and all was good for the first one. All the rest of the orders seemed fine. Next one declined an hour later which I thought was odd because the card info was now correct. Had to click through a few hoops to use that card again and it was fine.

What was annoying is the rest of the orders all seemed fine on the orders screen showing "Track package". You couldn't update those. The last 2 orders just declined now because, apparently, the old data was captured and used and no business logic was put in place to see if it had been updated based on other orders. And no email saying, hey, we see that you bought all this stuff with the same card and the first order was declined, do you want to update payment info for all of the rest of them? or any kind of business logic that recognized all other orders would be declined from the old card data and that the new card data should be applied.

yeah, this is a stupid rant but now I can't put an entire new front bumper on the Tacoma this weekend.

I've got to say, buying an old but relatively decent condition car these days and then putting new key elements on it makes it close to a brand new car. 2001 Tacoma looks great as is but with new bumpers, headlights and directionals, it will look like a 2015 for about $500.

I can relate Shaun....on many things that don't make sense and drive me crazy - and we are in year 2017....makes you wonder....

Mostly just wanted to say you're an inspiration to many of us who have older cars in various stages of restoration.

Good luck with your Taco! :)

Ordered some golf balls for a friend and Amazon showed them being shipped to a postal faculty but in reality the product was unavailable and never shipped.

Called my card company to dispute the charge, because I was charged even though the golf balls didn't ship. Amazon is no longer my first go to point. I will try to buy local first.

Thanks Baz. Here's the flip side, someone who actually thought about customer experience. I'm shopping for fans at homedepot.com. Find one I like that's available in my store, first, good checkbox on search results, but even better, the fan I like, says where it is in the store, aisle and bay #s, but someone really thought about the customer by including a "text location in store" feature so now I have it on my phone. Kudos to that customer experience team, definitely a point for brick & mortar over total online.

text. Someone should get a raise for this.

Shaun,
Contact them and explain what happened. Although this will not help you, it can (hopefully) assist those after you that may find themselves in the same predicament.

About ten days ago my wife directed me to a website (Dick's Sporting Goods) that was having a really nice July 4th sale on kayaks (we have been talking about getting kayaks for a couple of years but have never pulled the plug). I looked at their offerings and found an ideal fishing kayak for myself. This past Thursday, my wife said to me, “let’s get those kayaks”. I went back to the business’s webpage and the kayak was no longer on sale??? I contacted them via email and inquired about their July 4th sale and stated that their advertised price appeared to no longer be valid which was very concerning as July 4th has not yet even arrived. In my message, I offered to buy the kayak at their earlier advertised price. A short while later I received a reply and they apologized but, unfortunately, pointed out that they could not sell the kayak for the earlier price because it was already discounted BUT please take this discount code and apply it to your order. I plugged the discount code into the online ordering system and ACTUALLY was able to get the kayak for LESS money than it was originally advertised on the July 4th sale. This worked out extremely well for all parties because we purchased two kayaks and paddles with this discount code and Dick's Sporting Goods sold two kayaks and paddles. These items were picked up yesterday.

Let Amazon know what happened – customer service is what drives this industry!

Good advice Daryl, I will write to Amazon and tell them about this.

When fishing, would you ever want to tow a little catamaran, maybe 2 feet square, behind you to hold your tackle box and stuff?

Problem with HD text is they are mining for your phone number....

I take a pic of screen instead.

there are three stages to MOTO, card not present, transactions.

authorize, capture, settle.

authorize, check the card is good

capture, place a hold on the funds

settle, transfer the funds

merchants can do them as steps or do the first two at the same time

settle is a once daily end of day batch call to the credit card provider / bank

the first transaction failed at authorize, the next couple at capture, then the last at settle.

technically they all should have failed at authorize so likely something to do with amazon and how they process multiple transactions on the same card.

properly configured systems should ignore, treat as a mistake, multiple transactions for the same product / dollar amount within a 15 minute window.

but these were not duplicate transactions so would not have triggered that check

seems amazon may have skipped authorize for subsequent transactions and thats why they failed on capture or settle.

Shaun,
Mostly, we will just be doing some slow drifting. Fishing will be a secondary endeavor so my tackle needs will be very, very limited. We have a little bit over a 1/4 mile of creek frontage on our property (see gratuitous picture below!).
