Warning - not a doctor, didn't sleep at a motel 6 last night...

Our son had a very similar break. The doctor told us that it would heal on its own but that the knuckle would stay "back" toward the wrist joint. I think I see that same displacement in your break. Our doctor said our son would be likely to have some dexterity problems if they didn't realign it, pin it, and let it heal that way.

So we had it operated on. He healed fast, has full dexterity and zero issues. Wrenches with great enthusiasm.

Talk to a doctor.

Get a hand specialist to evaluate and fix that. If it needs fixation, have the specialist do it, not a jack of all trades orthopod.

I also had a similar break. they told me that I should have it set and have a small plate added, or else it would heal crooked. It still is crooked, but has not slowed me down with a wrench yet. I kept working with a cast on even .
How did that happen?

Belongs to a good friend on mine.
Happened when the drill motor he was using caught and twisted before he could release the trigger.

I had a similar event lately...but I kept on trying in spite of it continuing to catch.
Drilling 1" holes in a tree stump with a spade bit (poured Round-up into holes).
Fingers and wrist were sore for a couple of weeks.
Lesson learned...I won't try it again.

Is there any scissoring of the fingers when he tries to make a fist? Do the fingers try to cross over One another? If not, I'd try to treat that non-surgically. Will take 6 weeks for that to heal, so check x-Rays every 1-2 weeks during that time. Keep hand splinted and immobilized during that duration. The fracture will heal, and it won't look perfect on X-Rays, but it's not likey to affect the function of the hand much. However, rotational deformity is an absolute indication for surgical intervention.

The alternative is to percutaneously pin the broken metacarpal. That's a surgery. Then you'd be assured the bones won't move before they heal. Will still take 6 weeks to heal, and still must be immobilized during that time, even with surgery.

Hmmm. Scott, you missed a real good opportunity to say, "This big biker dude started messin' with me yesterday at happy hour and I had to put him in his place. Yeah, one punch."

Really appreciate all the input from you all.
He said it was pretty deformed when it happened, but he flexed it and heard popping as he closed his fist and things pretty much straightened out right after it happened. Almost passed out doing that.
He's not the type to keep it totally immobilized as he's got too much to do, or so he says.

^^^ Pay the price now (4-6 weeks of immobility/splinting/laying low), or risk paying the price later (lifetime of a hand that doesn't work quite right). I'm a conservative guy, so I'd opt for the former.
