cell phone and driving hits new low

going home yesterday I saw man, not a kid, but a man with his daughter in the car that had his cell phone MOUNTED to the steering wheel!!
yea, he had a clip that looked like it was made to hold the cell phone and it mounted to the steering wheel.
I couldn't believe it.
I just dont understand being so addicted the cell phone that you have to mount it to the steering wheel. why can people just pout it down.
it might add some years to my life if I was not so frustrated by this.

I was stuck behind a car at a stop sign the other day, the car sat there with no cars coming and the guy was either dialing or texting on his phone.
had NO care of the people behind him.

I have gotten to the point now if I am talking to someone and they start answering texts I just walk away. yea I know, maybe they wanted me to.

I could rant a lot more but it just winds me up.

I've gotten to the point where if I see someone engrossed in their "smart device" as they drive down the interstate, I pull up right next to them and blare the horn.

Even though my horn sucks (it is meager), most are startled to some extent.

It's fun. Try it sometime.

It's like a human version of cow-tipping.

My position on cell phones and driving is this:
If you're not allowed to text, talk, search the web, and/or play games on a cell phone while taking a driver's test, then that ought not be allowed while driving.
No "hands free", ear buds, etc. Nothing. No cell phone activity while driving...Period!!!
I'd like to see a violation of the above treated the same as drunk driving. Heavy fine and heavy consequences.

More and more lately I've had to be hyper vigilant about cell phone users...three "almosts" in two months. And riding a moto on public roads has lost much of its enjoyment for me in the past few years...it can sometimes border on a combat scenario..."head on a swivel".

I'll say it again, apparently those who make cell phone policies have not lost a loved one as a result of their position on the matter.

I rarely talk to anyone on the phone, and only text a few times to my wife, or when interested in a sale item on Craigslist. I have seen first hand how even talking on a bluetooth is very distracting, because it pulls the mind in different directions while trying to concentrate on traffic.
I don't find the same problem with music though.

I've thought about doing that. Driving back from Florida over the weekend, it was amazing how many people I would come up on doing 30-50 mph on the interstate, only to find them engrossed in their smart phone while I passed.

Exactly what I do every day and it does not take the interstate to get me doing it.

I actually saw a woman this past winter at 7am driving to work with her iPad on her steering wheel watching some video. Mind blowing. After a couple of honks of the horn she got the message and put it down.

You can always tell at a stop sign or light who is on the phone. They are the ones leaving way too much space and take off well after the light changes.

I look at it like my life is more valuable than their call, text, FB or whatever. So they can just suck it and be mad.

Was dating a girl. While driving home from work one day she called. Said I couldn't talk, was driving home from work, and would call her when I got home. When I got home she wouldn't answer the phone. And in fact, quit talking to me altogether, it was over. Maybe she wanted me dead, I don't know.

There should be a device that blocks cell phones from sending or receiving voice/text/data inside a car when the engine is running. Have it work similar to the "do not disturb" feature you can set at night and airplane mode.

i've gotten to the point where i dont even talk to the other passengers in the car period..i certainly dont reach over and touch them..hands free means exactly that..HAND FREE!

maybe the guy with the steering wheel was using the Google maps and following turn by turn instructions he asked the phone to find while he was sitting in his parked car, ignition off, seat-belt on, flashers flashing, wheels curbed, with seat adjusted 12" from steering wheel.....

there really is a lot of reasons to mount a phone in a car..i see it all the time..not on the steering wheel, but up on the dash or off the windshield.

What about the fricking idiot car manufacturers who are building lap-tops into the dash!
Drivers get just as distracted fumbling with all the stupid gadgets and settings, they're just as bad as phones IMO.

If it were up to me just starting the car engine would create a magnetic field around the driver's seat that prevents any signal from coming in or leaving.

BTW when my friends ask me if I got their text the answer is always "no, I'm not a teenage girl".

This conversation actually occurred in court during a case of mine many years ago.

The judge says, "so you were in a parking lot with your hand on her vagina?"

Defendant says, "no your Honor, we were driving down the road"

Judge bewildered says, "so you were driving with one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on her vagina?"

I won't talk on the phone while I'm driving, and yeah, some of my friends and family get really ticked off about it, like it's a personal insult. Weird, but apparently a pretty common attitude. And everyone rolls their eyes when I remind them that for most of human history we got by fine without constant contact. I don't think I've ever received an important text from a person, driving or not..

I have a Bluetooth speaker. I only turn it on if I am expecting an important call. Otherwise, you get voicemail. I also don't call out while driving.

I put one of these on my motorcycle and have managed to get one person to panic and throw their cell phone out the window. To make it even more fun it was on a bridge and over the edge it went.

I was laughing so hard I'm surprised I didn't crash. The driver of the car was really, really pissed.

I've mounted a Stebel on 4 of my 6 motos. Those close by with windows open will noticeably bolt.
Caution: Do NOT fire one off a closed garage.

its scary when they don't notice it.
