How do you pronounce Macan?

I'm watching a PCA video and the pronunciation surprised me.

How do you pronounce it?

MAY kən

or

Ma KAHN (or Mə KÄN)

I'm from the south, so I pronounce it wrong :)

But it rhymes with bacon....

Yeah, that's how I pronounce it. I remember years ago there was a "rule" that said that if you had a vowel-consonant-vowel, then the second vowel made the first vowel long, hence, MAY-kən

Then of course, there's also the nut...

pee KÄN
PEE can
pə KÄN

I'm from New Zealand so I speak a completely different dialect of English entirely. We pronounce it "not-real-porsche" but said so fast it doesn't offend anyone nearby.

Awesome, I knew that I could count on you guys for entertainment at least!

Javanese for tiger, apparently. I don't speak Javanese so can't verify.

As far as I know, all the deceased members of the Allman Brothers Band are buried in Macon.

Rhymes with bacon, huh?

I say it like the guy in the video.

The computer company Asus is not pronounced the way I thought it would be. I called them up once and thought I had the wrong number.:o

Macan, pronounced My Chun in Indonesian means Tiger.

aigel 07-25-2017 11:25 PM

I apparently pronounce it the PCA way. That was a LAME video. My god. Why compare those two cars? What kind of rubber is the 944 on? How worn out is it? No way in hell will it drive as described with fresh suspension components and good tires.

Last but not least, did you also see the TPS light on as the MACAN drives off into the sunset!?

I actually thought the video was interesting. I had no idea that PCA was even producing videos. I'm not surprised at the outcome, I always thought the 944 turbo was a little underwhelming, even the S version. It always felt soft and heavy to me. Given how clean that one was, it probably wasn't in that bad of condition, although it did smoke quite a bit.

Still, there isn't any Porsche from that era that could stand up to any of the modern Porsches. Porsche has learned a few things in the last 30 years.

I'm really glad Porsche are building SUVs like this.

In a few short years you'll be able to pick one up for the price of a new Hyundai. ;)

Maybe, maybe not. Look right now at the prices of the used ones. They are amazingly high. No doubt that will drop. My wife really liked the looks of a Macan. She looked on-line at sites all over the nation for a used one and they were not dropping in price very much.

In December we ordered one to fit her likes. It arrived in March. It is pretty amazing. The 30 years of technology makes for a different driving experience. Of course my daily driver is a 1986 El Camino and my toy is a 1985 911. Both very primitive compared to the Macan.

The important thing is she loves it and it fits right into the garage and looks like it belongs.

I'm surprised by the lap time difference. I've driven the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder S model Macan and was pleasantly surprised by how well they drive. A little more understeer than I like but overall very nice and lighter feeling than the Cayenne. The main problem is it's much smaller than the Cayenne inside. You can fit 5 people in the Cayenne comfortably but not in the Macan. I can also lay my freakishly tall road bike in the back of the Cayenne without removing the wheels which you can't do in the Macan.

Nickshu 07-26-2017 06:09 AM

I laughed when I saw that 944 Turbo vs Macan. Clearly they had to go back 30 years to find a sports car Porsche that the Macan SUV could beat for Macan marketing purposes. How dumb do they think we are?

Not that the Macan isn't a great car but I doubt I'll be seeing any of them out there at my next track day.
