Lions make Matthew Stafford the highest-paid player in NFL history
Lions make Matthew Stafford the highest-paid player in NFL history
Quote:

The Lions and Matthew Stafford agreed on a contract extension worth $135 million over five years on Monday, according to multiple reports. The deal makes the ninth-year quarterback the highest-paid player in NFL history.

At a reported annual value of slightly over $27 million, Stafford’s contract tops that of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, who led the league for about two months after inking a five-year, $125 million pact in June. The next NFL salary record could be set by Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is playing on his second straight one-year deal after the team again used the franchise tag on him.

Other quarterbacks who could be signing major contract extensions in the near future include*Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan. Meanwhile, the Lions and Stafford were able to bridge a large gap in negotiations that began in March, according to the Detroit Free Press................................

If Stafford had not agreed on an extension, he could in theory have played the next three seasons with the Lions under the franchise tag, costing the team upward of $96 million. In that sense, he gave the team a bit of a discount, albeit one he could easily afford having already banked over $110 million (per Spotrac) in earnings.
I guess the owners forgave the Lion's poor first quarter performance against the Patriots. It was painful to watch, completely outclassed.

Kachi, Cutler? Now you have gone to far......

I think there are more QB's in the league more deserving of being the highest paid.

onewhippedpuppy 08-30-2017 02:41 AM

He's the highest paid until the next quality starting QB nears free agency. These guys have figured out how to play the contract game, they can hold out and hit the lottery in free agency or get signed to a huge contract to stay put. Until there are more quality QBs available, each guy that comes up to contract time will be the new highest paid NFL player. If you don't like it, I bet there are 15-20 teams that would be thrilled to steal Stafford away from Detroit. As a Chiefs fan with a decent QB, I'll take that upgrade.....

If you hate the Matthew Stafford deal, you don't know a thing about NFL QBs
Stafford has carried the Lions for years and it was his turn to get paid, so get over it

You will look at the numbers being reported on the new deal for Detroit Lions quarterback Matt Stafford, one that reportedly makes him the highest-paid player in the league, and you will scoff.

You will look at his record against teams with records better than .500, and him never having won a playoff game, and it will make you seethe.......................

The problem with Stafford is he's a gunslinger. He will take chances that others won't, and sometimes the results are bad. But that same mentality is why he can fire a rifle shot for a big play into tight coverage. He doesn't play scared. I love that............

So Lions fans need to get used to his daring ways, his ability to fit passes into tight windows that make your jaw drop and his chancy throws that make you throw things at the TV. That's who he is now, but if the Lions get more help and actually play good defense and run the ball, Stafford can be even better.
I am very happy the Detroit Lions came to an understanding with Stafford.

And would you rather be chasing McCown, Hoyer or Fitzpatrick every year? Yep, didn't think so.
Yea, getting into the rotating quarterback cycle is going to work only in rare circumstances and for few teams. Detroit's problems are not in the QB position.

A lot of people I know like to blame the various levels of coaching.

In the past I believed it was the very WCF they now wear on their sleeves in honor.

I see only Honolulu Blue skies ahead - the team colors.

I really like reading about player/personnel issues. Who matches up with who, how do plan ahead 2-3 yrs with who know what... really interesting to me. How do you expect to build a team when such a big chunk of your cap is with 1 player? Seems like it can work for a 1-2 yr run, maybe, but you need so many pieces overpaying for just 1 can do you in.

I dont see Stafford much but just dont see him as a top 5-10 QB. But, whats the alternative? Tough choices.

kach22i 09-10-2017 12:35 PM

The Lions defense earned their paychecks, Stafford is still working on his.

We will take the win over the little red birds.

Rodgers at Green Bay isn't perfect either, but a force to contend with.

Stafford looked OK.

What I liked is the rapport he seems to have with his receivers. Lots of mutual encouragement and joint celebrations.

Stafford got miffed while in formation late in the 4th and called a time out. Couple plays later the Lions ran away with the game.

I wish Matt Stafford well, he's the only reason I started watching the Lions about 12 seasons ago.

Whoever gets him is going to see some exciting play.

cabmandone 01-25-2021 11:00 AM

Da Foosball Team will probably make a strong move for him. They have a way of making big moves that never pan out.

Crowbob 01-25-2021 04:26 PM

Stafford is so beat up he won't be in the NFL much longer. 12 years on the field with NO offensive line will do that.

Come to think of it, the Lions never had a defensive line either, at least not in this century and half of the last one.

How do you keep a Lion out of your yard?

Put up a goal post...

stevej37 01-26-2021 05:24 AM

Just think what the Lions record would be for the last 30 years if they had just an 'average' kicker.
It's the one position that they get A's in.

Every quarterback in the NFL has on average twice as much time in the backfield, but maybe it just looks that way.

Ever play "Hot Potato"? The ball touches his hands and he gets rid of it just as quickly much of the time.

Stafford throws in the same amount to time it takes a 300 lb man to sprint to his position (unblocked), at least it looks that way.

Stafford is averaging the shortest amount of time in the pocket (2.27 seconds) and the second-shortest time before the pass (2.86 seconds) of any starting quarterback.
I hope the team he ends up provides him with at least NFL average protection, he will light the field on fire.

I think you are right, but I didn't watch football from 1979 to 2009 (30-years) so I will have to take your word for it.

I did catch a some highlights of Barry Sanders when watching the news once in a while and almost got sucked back in.

cabmandone 01-26-2021 06:18 AM

The highest paid typically ends up on a mediocre team because the team doesn't have the room to bring in the supporting cast. I think Mahomes is the highest paid now?? It'll be interesting to see how long they keep the talent around him. Brady was always in the top 10 for highest paid... probably top 5. Not sure he was ever the "highest" paid. Look at the number of rings on his fingers.
