For cars, 12. 1959 El Camino that was the ranch manure truck. The other small ranches in the area shared private, dirt roads in the coastal mountains of California.
Not this exact truck, but close: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1501593834.jpg I was driving our small tractors much earlier. |

Huge trunk, big engine bay and not a lot of power.:) |
I was 13. My dad let me drive his Sunbeam Alpine. Some friends had a farm in New Hampshire with a lot of lanes between the fields to drive around on. When we moved from New Hampshire to Guam, my dad had it shipped over there. He let me drive in on public roads there, with him in the other seat of course. I believe the maximum speed at that time on the island was around 45 MPH.

13, my dad let me drive his '63 Olds. I would drive him on Sunday mornings to his friends store in Brooklyn. Once a police car pulled up, looked and drove off. I was obviously too young to drive. No big deal in 1967. The best was when I was 16 and had a learner's permit. He let me drive his brand new '71 Buick from Bayonne back to Brooklyn, over the VZ bridge for the first time. I'd never let my son do that!

at my 8 year old dad broke his right hand or somming, so he did steering with his left hand and pedal work, while I did shifting. oh yeah, and he was a part time rally driver with a penchant for speeding.. Sometimes he'de be wanting to check some paperwork while driving, so then i did steering from the pax seat.. yeah, great example :P he also taught me shooting.
Then progressed to the garden tractor, a 2cv in the field and by the time i was 18 i took to driving like a kitty cat to a puddle of spilt milk. |
Started on dad's lap around 8 or 9 at the airport (Small uncontrolled general aviation). Around 10-11 I was "allowed" to move cars in/out of the garage to wash them. By 12 I was able to drive alone at the airport.
