what about old school plain-jane dark welding hood? historically, in my past eclipse events, i was pretty satisfied walking outside and seeing that it was dark :) never needed to look up.

What I've read (and is I think is in the article that I linked above) is that only level 12, 13 and 14 welding masks/glass are safe. Anything less is not supposed to be safe.

ONLY 14 (or darker, do they make darker than 14?), and ONLY if it's in immaculate condition. Any scratch/imperfection can be trouble.

I would not use an auto darkening one, they don't respond fast enough, and once the sun is partially covered (when you're most likely to want to look) they might not respond at all.

People, just buy some eclipse glasses. I know I harped on a few days ago about only buying from certain companies (and I still will harp on that), but I'd rather you bought cheap Chinese glasses over welding masks of dubious condition.
Hell, they had eclipse glasses for sale at Lowes by my house this weekend, you don't even have to search around online, buy some locally!

ok, this is a ridiculously simple question that I cannot find on the inter webs: the eclipse is to occur in SC at 17.16 UT, WTF time is that in daylight savings time???!!!

nota 08-08-2017 04:08 PM

ut is gmt

normally 5 hours ahead 4 with DST

but 17;16 is west coast
18:45 ut= 14:45 estdst 0r 2:45 on the SC coast

nota 08-08-2017 04:14 PM

some where in a carolina depends on the weather
maybe mountains if good somewhere else if chasing clear spots

Sunsquatch... Or eclipsesquatch?

Just for fun... a map that helps you find a location where you can see the total eclipse *and* have a chance of seeing Bigfoot (aka, Sasquatch).

Carhenge is in the path of the eclipse...unfortunately, Devil's Tower is not.

Maybe a Sasquatch hiding in there?

I received my Celestron Eclipsmart 10x42 binoculars yesterday from B&H Photo. (they were $59, so got free 2 day shipping) I just checked out the sun, and was able to see my first sunspot. It looks like they've bumped the price up to the usual $69 now.

This is a reasonable facsimile of what I see through them, a round globe with a very distinct dark dot just right of top center. I don't see the lighter areas around the sunspot.

Visiting my Dad in Gastonia on the date. He says he does not give a rat's ass about it. I will schlep him down to Greenville, regardless, or come down solo. Suspect town will be packed. I/we will squeeze in.

eCLIPse or E-clips? My hillbilly relatives want to know how to pronounce it.

I would say a blend leaning towards E-clips. It's a long E but not a hard one.

Looked up "Long E" and there are a dozen variants.
