Alternative to MS Project

Does anyone have an alternative (free would be nice) to MS Project?

I don't need all the bells and whistles that MS Project has, but want to be able schedule multiple buildings at once.

I bought a license on eBay for $20. Downloaded the program from MS and put in the key. Works great.

One of the few products I've encountered where it seems literally no one makes anything comparable in terms of usability.

Others opinions will certainly differ but for me it's Project or nothing.

I'll have to look into that. Thanks!

I have used MS Project for years - i know of nothing that comes close.

I've got a copy of MS project packed away somewhere back home in Charleston but I'm in Atlanta.

Maybe I can find it when I go back in a few weeks.

What do you really need out of MS Project? Are you trying to do a basic timeline or are you going to really utilize what it can do?

The Gant charts are my favorite feature.

I've tried a dozen alternatives and never found anything that came close.

This coming from a guy who despises pretty much everything MSFT does with the exception of Outlook / Exchange and Xbox.

Gant charts - I can break down tasks into sub tasks, create a timeline and itemize costs. I import the file into excel and create a cost sheet which I use to manage the budget of the project.

I use Project for Corporate projects especially when I'm asked to do "what if" projects.

All I really need for this project is to schedule each task, start finish dates and trade responsible. No reports etc needed. Since it's a project of 10 apartment bldgs, I can use one schedule for each bldg.

Excell was wholly developed by MSFT.

Was not bought.

My home computers are Macbook Pros. My company, and the Universities we team with all use MSFT...the whole Office suite, including Project.

MS Office for Mac includes Excel but not Project. I looked around for alternatives for all of us but decided to buy a laptop compliant with Office and Project. It was cheaper and my Assistant PM is a beast on Project.

I did use this for a 30 day trial: https://activecollab.com/

You might try Libre Project which is a free product. When I migrated to a Mac at work I had to find something that would work for running projects. I recently found SmartSheet which several of our businesses use. It is entirely web based and built from the ground up to be mobile using their app or using a browser. The great thing about SmartSheet is you can share it with others and can update it in realtime with integration with Box, SalesForce, etc.

+1

Very basic but does the job with simple projects. A bit painful if there are any adjustments to the schedule or maybe I'm not good at using it..

I used MS Project for years and frankly nothing compares to it, but its too expensive for occasional use.
