Books or articles on Carrera GT, Ruf CTR, McLaren F1

I find the engineering behind these things fascinating.

I loved the "Porsche 911 Story" by Paul Frere because it went into a lot of detail about a lot of aspects of the car.

I have Excellence was Expected, but I wish it had more on the Carrera GT. It seems like a whole book, albeit possibly not a terribly thick one, could be written about the CGT.

I also have "Driving Ambition: The Official Inside Story of the McLaren F-1" although I wish it had more detail.

I'm surprised there's not more out there about the Ruf Yellow Bird. That's another one that a book could be written about.

So what are your favorite articles and or books or videos about some of these iconic cars?

There's a DVD that goes into behind-the-scenes detail about the 1995 McLaren Le Mans campaign where the F1 came 1st, 3rd 4th and 5th. I have it at home somewhere, I'll try to find the title.

I collect articles & memorabilia on Bristol cars, trolling eBay turns up interesting stuff from time to time.

I have seen a McLaren F1 handbook come up on eBay maybe twice, but way (& I mean way), out of my price range.

Yeah, I'd love to have a set of the McLaren F1 titanium wrenches, but I'm sure that's also way out of my price range.

You mean there's no PDF download of the manual available on their website? ;) :D

Check out our Pelican Bookstore, link below; we have quite a bit of books on the history of some great cars.

Those are all indeed great books.

Have you checked out "000" Magazine? Issue #2 just arrived. It's got some real detail. Life has been in overdrive for me, and I have not even had a chance to start even one article.

Those sound really cool, but I just don't think I can justify that sort of price tag.

Interesting, there is a PDF version of the CGT owners manual online.

Perhaps not exactly what you're looking for, but you might enjoy a piece I did for the POC Velocity Magazine in 2014 on Art Center College of Design. It includes some background on the CGT development and the Art Center connection. Check out the story starting on page 32:

I'll be really shocked if that guy gets that price or even close. "it's part of the $13.5k set and this is practically new." Yeah, but it's not new, it's not perfect and its not with the rest of the set.

Steve, if you liked those books you will really enjoy 'Porsche 917 - The Undercover Story'

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Porsche-917-Undercover-Gordon-Wingrove/dp/0954999029

I'm a race car designer and worked on the McLaren F1 from start to finish of the project. Even have my own copy of Driving Ambition with a signed thanks from Gordon Murray which I have yet to read

I've a good idea of the engineering that goes into designing/building a race car and this Porsche 917 book is easily the best technical/engineering car book I've ever read.

Its not too heavy on the fact and figures like some books are so makes for a very relaxing and enjoyable read. Only downside is its quite expensive but I think its worth the price being asked as I'm sure you will want to read it more than once.

That sounds very cool, thx. Any interesting tidbits or stories from the F1 that you can and would like to share?

I can highly recommend the Wingrove book on the 917. It's easily the best one ever written on the subject. Another car book I can't recommend highly enough is Peter Windsor's book on the 2000 Ferrari F1 car.
