Docs? Hand hurts only when I squeeze with all 4 fingers.

So a month or two ago I was working on my car, and grabbed something really hard with my ring finger. I felt a pop. Ice and rest and after a few days it felt fine.

Now I've been waking up in the morning it's really hurts to grip, things hard with that hand. What's *really weird* is that it only hurts most (6 out of 10) when i use all 4 different fingers. If I use 1,2, or 3 it drops to a 4.

The pain starts in the middle of the palm and sort of travels up through my wrist to forearm.

I figure I damaged a tendon? Why this weird behavior? What should I do?

Have done exactly the same thing. Took several months to resolve but eventually lessened over time and is now gone. Not sure what happened but suspect either partial tendon rupture or fascial release. Hurt like crazy.

Go see a hand/wrist specialist. I did this years ago when I had trouble with my thumb and 1st finger with something called trigger finger. It was nearly impossible to do any shooting and when I'd drive the race car my right fingers and thumb would sort of "snap" around the wheel and it was very hard to get loose.

There was no pop though. Just a sustained overload.

My fear for you is something partially detached.

If you can post an x-ray or two we can make a better analysis for you. The wrist specialist I went to see had a small x-ray machine in the office that looked like one of those old fashioned transparency projectors. The image showed on a monitor and he was able to send it to my regular doctor after he game me the shot.

Patient: Doc, it hurts when I do this!

Doc: Then don't do that.

Serial if you heard a pop and now it hurts, you most likely have tendon or ligament damage and although it may heal in time chances are if won't be right or as good as it was.

Get a pro to look at it, one of them anthropolopedic doctors or whatever they're called.

That's basically what my doc told me. I was training for a marathon and went to him and told him my knee was going out on me when I hit 18 miles. He said, "Do you really need a doctor to tell you to stop trying to run 18 miles?"

So the doc says: i don't like the way your husband looks".
Wife says, "I don't either but he's good to the kids".

"Doctor, my leg hurts. What can I do?" The doctor says, "Limp!"

I told the doctor I broke my leg in two places. he said "stop going to those places".

I am so disappointed in you guys. Eight replies and not a single wanking crack.

I'd agree with John Rogers. Sounds like you have stenosing tenosynovitis (the beginnings of trigger finger). I did the same to a finger about a month ago while wrenching on my RV. It hurts and feels stiff, particularly in the morning, but unless it's actually triggering, I'd wait on a cortisone injection.

IL Bone and Joint has an emergency clinic similar to an ER. I had a problem with my foot a few years ago. I walked into the clinic, took an X-ray, diagnosed the problem, put me in a soft cast and made me an appointment with a foot specialist. The clinic I went to is in Glenview but I cant help but think there might be one near you. This sure beats a hospital ER.

Thanks all. I'll set up time with an ortho I guess. Worried about carpal tunnel but I think I really have a poorly healing tendon issue.

No definites in medicine, but usually carpal tunnel is symptomatic for numbness and tingling in the fingers. Sometimes pain in the fingers/palm/palmar wrist area. And there is some overlap between patient populations for trigger finger and carpal tunnel (because of similar underlying root causes for both conditions), so about a 1/3 of patients who have one, will also have the other. But carpal tunnel is a nerve problem (due to tendon swelling in the wrist/palm), so usually it manifests as finger numbness. Trigger finger is tendon swelling (same tendons), but in the fingers.

I am with you on this. I have a mild case of carpal tunnel. I get tingling in the fingers. I can stroke my under forearm with a finger and get a tingling sensation thru my fingers. I have wrist supports I wear at night which alleviates the tingling. Changing my work habits over the years has been a big help too.

this happens to me sometimes.

usually after doing something strenuous like yard-work. i typically cannot isolate the pain in my hand..it just kinda aches all over. the weird thing is i can massage the pain to relieve it..i rub my forearm near the wrist and i can feel the tingling ache somewhere in my hands. oh, and my fingers lock up in a semi clutched position. i can ball my fist, but i cannot open my hands up straight.

usually last a few days and goes away.

For me, it only hurts with disuse. As I am more active, it hurts less. Mornings are the worst.

Right. Two days after hard work. Wake up in the morning with fingers frozen in a half opened position. I usually run warm water over my hand and message my wrist.

Hope you feel better quick. My doc xrayd my hand once when it was bad. He said it showed nothing. I think he was looking at my joint gaps. No MRI. I don't know my issue is. Hope you figure our yours.
