I want to go check this out and maybe even the hotel room. That is a cool part of AZ for sure, tons of cool stuff up there.

I camped in a small cave one time in OK. Super cool, except the sound of the trickling water in the cave made me need to get up to pee like 4 times!

Not sure it is the same place but the family and I went to some cave in AZ a couple years ago (area was where the movie "Cars" was thought up). You took an elevator down and were then able to walk around with a guide. The parts I remember were the U.S. Government disaster shelter and the area one could rent to either stay over night or have a function. It was really cool but I think I would go batty by the darkness and silence when the lights turn off (the camper is in control of the lights).
There was a German guy on the tour with us (my family and him). I didn't know that route 66 was so big with the German biker community. The tour guide I believe was American Indian (just a guess). He and his family live off the grid. He hunts and gardens for a lot of his food. They use solar power and get there water (in tanks) from the caverns. I guess there is a well there that supports the area. The residents have large containers on there trucks they transport water with. I think he said the closest super market was like an hour or so away. Nice guy. |

I need to check this out. I have never slept so well in my life as when in Germany, where a lot of the houses have window blinds that really block all light, like being in a cave. Put a towel in front of the door, throw a shirt over the clock radio and it's pitch black. As your eyes adjust, you keep trying to find some kind of light and there is simply none. I was in a small cave around Antietam, MD once that got that dark. Need to experience that again to get a good night's sleep.
